What Nerf gun shoots the fastest in practice is almost always a flywheel: motors keep the wheels spinning, so rate of fire is limited by the magazine and pusher, not by how fast you can prime. That is not the same thing as the highest FPS, and it is not a reason to buy the loudest cage on a listing photo. Rate of fire is not FPS
FPS is a chronograph reading of one dart leaving the muzzle. Rate of fire is how many of those darts you can send in a second. Flywheels win the second number when the cage is up to speed and the mag does not bind. They can still lose a chrono contest to a strong springer. Fields usually cap both. If you chase “fastest” without asking which one the organiser means, you will buy the wrong upgrade.

Flywheel grouping is wheel concentricity, cage alignment, dart consistency and a pack that does not sag mid-string. Worn or glazed wheels throw low. Loose cage screws throw sideways. Mixed dart lengths jam. A hotter motor on a bad pinch chews foam. Tune the cage you have — flywheel tuning — before you shop motors.
