How Dart Choice Affects FPS & Range
FPS is only the speed measured near the muzzle. It does not by itself measure impact energy, accuracy, safe engagement distance or effective range. Dart mass, shape, foam condition, barrel and flywheel fit, the launcher, and the testing method can all change the result.
Why one number is not enough
With a given launcher configuration, changing to a heavier dart will often produce a lower FPS reading, but the actual muzzle energy can rise, fall or remain similar. Drag and stability vary by dart design, so no dart weight reliably guarantees more range or accuracy. Treat comparisons as tests of a complete, specific setup—not a general rule about “light” and “heavy” darts.
Test safely and consistently
- Use only darts approved for the exact product, in good condition, and follow its safety instructions.
- Wear appropriate eye protection and keep people clear of the test area.
- Use the same chronograph, distance, dart type and environmental conditions when comparing results.
- Record more than one shot and report the dart type and mass with the result.
- Follow the organiser’s current rules. If it specifies a dart type, energy limit or chronograph procedure, those rules prevail over a bare FPS number.
Useful interpretation
Look for repeatable, controllable performance rather than the highest single reading. A change that improves a group on one setup may reduce it on another. Do not modify a stock product or its darts unless the manufacturer permits it, and never use a configuration outside the rules of the venue.
