Screw holes at both ends allow parts to be attached at either side of the mount, and the hexagonal cross-section keeps it from spinning under load.
Tamiya's compatibility listing for this mount set spans the same nineteen chassis as the FRP Multi Roller Setting Stay — Type 3 through the current ME chassis — with Type 1 needing extra fitting work as already noted. A common use for the hex mounts is stacking two multi-roller setting stays with a gap between them, widening the roller stance further than either stay could manage alone; the hexagonal cross-section is what stops the mount twisting under the sideways load the rollers place on it mid-corner.
