Essential Mini 4WD Accessories Guide
A starter kit gives you one car in one configuration. Everything that keeps that car running well after the first few packs — spare tyres, a backup gear, fresh AA cells, the right screw when one strips — is what "Mini 4WD accessories" actually means. Tyres and wheels: the accessory you will replace most often
Tyres take the most repeated contact of any part on the car — every wall touch, every lane change, every landing loads the surface — so they are the most commonly restocked accessory. Tamiya's official race regulations set tyre diameter between 22mm and 35mm and width between 8mm and 26mm; different tyre sizes and materials may be mixed on one car, provided nothing detaches during a run. Cutting tyre material is permitted, but changing the surface material's properties is not. Keep at least one spare set in the diameter and compound you actually race with, plus a spare pair of wheel hubs — a cracked hub from a hard landing takes the car out just as effectively as a torn tyre, and it isn't something you can improvise trackside.
Gears and drivetrain spares
Gears are the accessory most people underestimate. A plastic gear run for several packs under a Dash-class motor develops worn or chipped teeth well before it looks obviously damaged, and a stripped drive gear turns a fast car into a stalled one instantly. Keep a spare gear set matching your chassis's ratio, not only the ratio you plan to run — a track layout can change that choice on the day. Ball bearings for the gearbox shafts are a legal upgrade under the official regulations, which specifically allow gears to be drilled or shaved to reduce weight and to accept ball bearings; that makes a small stock of standard-size ball bearings (commonly 620-size for shafts, plus flanged bearings for roller use) worth carrying alongside the gear, since a worn bushing bore is a common reason a "slow" car isn't actually a motor problem.
Batteries, terminals and small hardware
Batteries are the accessory the rulebook is strictest about: official events accept only Tamiya-branded R6/AA/UM3 batteries, and a battery or label that looks damaged in any way is rejected at inspection for safety reasons. Bring more than one fresh pair — output sags across a race day, and a rejected or flat cell with no backup is an avoidable non-start. Battery terminal contacts wear too, from repeated insertion and removal; the regulations permit only kit-included terminals or official Grade-Up Part terminals, and explicitly prohibit soldering or double-plated terminals, so a spare terminal set is a legitimate accessory. Round out the small-hardware spares with 2mm screws in the sizes your chassis uses, plus aluminium or resin spacers and lock nuts — the parts most likely to vanish during a rushed trackside rebuild, and pre-sorting them by size prevents a five-minute fix from becoming a scavenger hunt.
Weights and mass dampers: tuning mass, not adding bulk
The official minimum car weight is 90g including the battery and motor, with no maximum specified — so weight accessories exist mainly to bring a light build back up to the legal floor, or to shift balance forward/rearward, not to add mass for its own sake. Small balance-weight sets let you make that adjustment in known increments. Mass dampers are a related consumable: the rubber or sponge element compresses and tears with use, and a damper that has lost its give no longer does its job. How many spare tyres and batteries should I bring to an event?
At minimum, one full spare tyre set in your race compound and two spare pairs of Tamiya-branded AA batteries. Tyres wear unevenly across a day of heats, and battery output drops enough between runs that a single pair rarely lasts an entire event comfortably.
Are ball bearings legal for gears and rollers?

Do I need carbon or aluminium spares, or is stock plastic enough?
