Aero Avante is Mini 4WD REV Series No.1 — item 18701, the kit that introduced the AR chassis in July 2012 as the flagship of Tamiya's 30th-anniversary Mini 4WD lineup. Over a dozen years later the AR chassis is still in production, still being recoloured into new limited editions, and still legal for official events, because Aero Mini 4WD is one of the machine classes explicitly named as permitted in Tamiya's current race regulations. What the AR chassis actually is

AR ships with six rollers as standard and sits its batteries in a low position rather than stacked above the drivetrain, which is what gives Aero Avante its low, wedge-shaped stance. It uses a monocoque main frame rather than the separate upper-deck-and-gearbox construction of older standard chassis, with ground-effect channels running underneath and a detachable rear diffuser designed around the same Venturi principle full-size aero packages use. A removable under-panel gives quick access to the battery bay without stripping the car, and side air intakes feed the motor and battery compartment for cooling. Figures are Tamiya's own published chassis specifications; treat dashes as "not published for direct comparison" rather than zero. Chassis weights are bare figures — no motor, no batteries. Tamiya also lists AR at about 123.5g with motor and batteries fitted, and the 90g minimum total race weight in the current regulations is measured on that completed-car basis — motor and batteries included — so a stock Aero Avante clears it once built, not because the bare chassis alone sits over the line.

"Aero Avante" has shipped as several distinct products on the same AR chassis, and they are not interchangeable in what they include. Check the item number printed on the box before assuming a part, motor or tyre is the same across versions.

The practical difference that matters for tuning: 18706's Speed Spec starter pack swaps the stock 4.2:1 gearing for a faster 3.5:1 set and adds a Rev-Tuned 2 motor plus a starter brake-and-damper kit out of the box — it is built for long, low-corner-count tracks. The base 18701 kit and the recoloured special editions (95655, and the earlier 95269 Black Metallic and 95268 Blue Metallic releases) all use the stock 130 motor at 4.2:1 and differ mainly in body/chassis colour, wheel finish and included stickers, not in the underlying chassis engineering.

Building a fair AR-chassis baseline

Before adding option parts, get the stock geometry right, the same as with any chassis. AR's removable under-panel and low-mounted battery bay make this easier than on older chassis, but two AR-specific things are worth checking on a fresh build: the detachable rear diffuser seats flush against the underside — a diffuser sitting proud of the chassis floor will drag on a track surface or a jump landing — and the six stock rollers run on plastic bushings rather than eyelets, so they need to spin freely without excess play before you judge whether the car needs upgraded ball-bearing rollers at all. Run the car on the stock 4.2:1 gearing and stock motor for at least a few packs first. If the car pulls, wanders or scrubs speed in corners, check gear mesh, axle straightness and roller alignment before reaching for tuning parts — a chassis-level fault will survive a part swap.

Tuning inside the AR chassis's own limits

AR is a standard single-shaft chassis, not a Mini 4WD PRO chassis. That single fact governs most of what you can and cannot swap onto it: current regulations restrict PRO double-shaft motors to ME, MA and MS chassis machines specifically, so Hyper-Dash PRO, Mach-Dash PRO and the rest of the PRO motor line are not legal — or physically compatible — on Aero Avante. Is the Aero Avante AR chassis still legal for official racing?

Yes, as of the current published regulations — Aero Mini 4WD is listed by name among the permitted machine classes, alongside Fully-Cowled, Super, Laser, REV and PRO machines. Regulations, permitted-motor lists and event classes change over time and organiser rules and on-day technical inspection take precedence over any article, this one included, so confirm the current official race regulations and, where a Stock Class event applies, the Stock Class regulations before entering.

Can I put a PRO motor or MS-chassis parts on an Aero Avante?

No. AR is a standard single-shaft chassis; Mini 4WD PRO double-shaft motors and most PRO-chassis-specific gearbox parts are built for ME, MA and MS machines and are not compatible with AR's single-shaft drivetrain.
