Choosing Mini 4WD Bodies

A Mini 4WD body looks like the part with the least to do with lap times — the chassis carries the gearbox, the rollers set the line, the motor sets the speed. But the shell is the one part every official inspector checks, the one part every roller and stay must physically clear, and, on a polycarbonate build, one of the few places left to move weight once the drivetrain is dialled in. This guide covers material choice, what the regulations say about a body, and how to fit one without fighting your own roller stack.

ABS or polycarbonate: what actually changes

The shell that ships in most kits is pre-formed ABS plastic: rigid, ready to clip or screw on with little more than sprue-gate cleanup, and easy to paint on the outside. Tamiya also sells polycarbonate ("clear body") shells for many of the same kits, arriving not as flat sheets but as thin, semi-transparent, vacuum-moulded 3D shells, marked with cut lines for trimming the body outline, roller clearance and stay mounts. A polycarbonate shell must be trimmed from the moulded shape with a hobby knife or curved scissors along those marked lines, then painted from the inside so the finish survives contact instead of chipping off the outer surface. Being moulded from much thinner stock than the ABS original, a polycarbonate body of similar coverage typically ends up noticeably lighter — weight you can spend elsewhere, whether that's a mass damper, placed ballast, or more margin above the class minimum. The trade-off: careful, stress-relieved cutting to avoid cracking a corner, and a respray to reuse the shell for a different colour scheme.

What the official regulations require of a body

Whichever material you run, Tamiya's official Mini 4WD Race Regulations set the same baseline for every class. Bodies "should have stickers applied or be painted, and must be securely attached to the chassis." Homemade bodies are prohibited outright, and the regulations reject a couple of substitutes builders sometimes try: a cut-off section of a clear body kept as decoration, or a wing run with no body at all. A body judged particularly small, or hard to check for paint or stickers, can also be turned away at inspection.

Stock Class tightens the same rules further

Stock Class explicitly permits clear and polycarbonate bodies, but narrows what you can do to the stock shell to two actions: shaving material down, and cutting away sections that genuinely obstruct fitment. Splitting a body into separate pieces isn't permitted. Where a stock body's shape blocks mounting on a different compatible chassis, a competitor may cut only the obstructing section to relocate it — not redesign the shape. A polycarbonate body must still be trimmed along the shell's own marked cut lines; offcuts can't be repurposed as separate parts. Stock Class does not require a driver figure or a rear wing — both are optional, and losing one mid-race isn't grounds for disqualification. Clearance around rollers and stays

Whatever shell you fit, roller and stay clearance is a mechanical problem, not a rules one. Trim generously around every roller position marked on a polycarbonate shell, and dry-fit before the final cut — a shell that only lightly brushes a roller under straight running can bind hard once the chassis twists through a bank, unsettling the car unpredictably rather than just slowing it down. Rear body posts and wing mounts sit close to rear stays and dampers on most current chassis, so recheck clearance after fitting a new brake stay or roller plate, not only at initial build. Matching a body to its chassis family

Body mounting isn't standardised across Tamiya's current chassis lineup, so a shell built around one chassis's posts doesn't automatically fit another. Among the double-shaft, midship chassis, ME uses separately moulded front and rear bumper parts with its six rollers; MA is a single-piece monocoque frame; and MS splits into three sections — nose, centre and tail — for easier swapping, changing how a body's mounting tabs sit against each section. Front-motor FM-A and Super FM chassis, and the rear-motor VZ, AR, VS and Super-series chassis, each carry their own bumper and post layout again. Weight as a tuning input, not just a number to cut

A lighter shell is not automatically the faster one. Once a car sits comfortably above the 90g minimum, where the saved weight goes matters more than how much you saved. Some builders keep the ABS shell for the mass it carries high and forward, resisting the car nosing up over a jump. Others strip to polycarbonate to free up gram budget, then add a small weight low and central to lower the centre of gravity without changing overall mass. Treat the body like a mass damper — a place to put weight on purpose — rather than just a place to remove it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a driver figure or rear wing to race?

Not under Stock Class rules — both are optional, and losing one during a race isn't grounds for disqualification. Other classes or a specific event's organiser rules may treat trim pieces differently, so check on the day.

Can I cut a polycarbonate body freehand instead of following the marked cut lines?

Stock Class restricts cutting to shaving material down and removing genuine obstructions — it doesn't permit reshaping the body beyond the shell's own marked cut lines, and splitting a body into pieces isn't allowed. Follow the moulded shell's marked lines and confirm current wording before an event; organiser rules and technical inspection have the final say.

Will a heavier ABS body fail the minimum weight check?

No — 90g is a floor for the complete car including motor and batteries, not a target. A stock ABS shell clears that floor easily; a heavily trimmed polycarbonate shell may need a little added weight elsewhere to reach it on an otherwise very light build.
