Mini 4WD Body Trimming Guide

Body trimming looks like the fastest job on a Mini 4WD workbench: a few cuts, a file pass, done. It is also the job most likely to get a car turned away at inspection or unsettled on a bank, because the line between "trimmed for clearance" and "reshaped" is drawn by Tamiya's regulations, not by how good the cut looks. This guide covers what the rules permit, ABS versus polycarbonate technique, where clearance genuinely matters, and how trimmed weight fits the rest of the car.

What the regulations actually let you cut

Tamiya's official regulations permit "modifications to parts that keep the original part shape, such as simply cutting away the material," and specifically allow opening holes or painting on the top side of the rollers where a body panel sits close. What they do not permit is reshaping: a body must still read as the original shell. Homemade bodies are banned outright, and two shortcuts are rejected — an offcut from a clear body mounted as its own piece, and a wing run with no body underneath it. A body judged too small, or too altered to check for paint or stickers, can also be turned away.

Stock Class narrows this further: body work is "limited to shaving it down, and cutting away parts which are an obstruction," and a body cannot be split into pieces. Where a stock shell blocks mounting on a different compatible chassis, you may cut only the obstructing section to relocate it, not redesign the panel. A polycarbonate body must be cut exactly along the kit manual's printed lines, and the chassis itself may never be cut under Stock Class. Tools: ABS shells versus polycarbonate shells

The two body materials Tamiya ships want different tools. Pre-formed ABS shells — clipped or screwed onto most kits ready-painted — are rigid enough to cut with side cutters or a fine hobby saw, finishing to the line with a flat file; ABS chips rather than cracks, so a slightly rough cutter pass is recoverable with filing. Unformed polycarbonate ("clear body") shells are the opposite: thin, vacuum-moulded shells with cut lines marked on them for the body outline and roller/stay clearance, meant to be trimmed with curved hobby scissors or a sharp knife along those marked lines exactly, as Stock Class requires. Polycarbonate flexes under a dull blade and cracks along the edge rather than chipping, so a sharp, dedicated blade matters more here than on ABS — see the tyre-cutting tools guide for a similar sharp-blade job. Whichever material, cut outside your intended line first and file down to it in small passes: material removed cannot be put back, and an oversized shell is a five-minute fix, while one cut too far means starting over.

Where clearance actually matters

Roller and stay clearance is a mechanical problem before it is a rules one. Trim generously around every roller position — marked on the shell's own cut lines for a polycarbonate body; dry-fit the chassis with rollers and stays mounted before cutting ABS. A body that only lightly brushes a roller under straight running can bind hard once the chassis twists through a bank or lands off a jump — intermittent contact that is far harder to diagnose later than a car that is simply slow. Rear body posts and wing mounts commonly sit close to rear brake stays and mass dampers, so recheck clearance again after fitting a new stay, not only at the original build. Finishing edges and keeping the mounts intact

A rough cut edge is a crack waiting for the first hard landing, particularly on polycarbonate, which is thin enough that a stress point at a sharp internal corner can propagate across the panel after repeated impacts. File or sand every cut edge smooth, and round internal corners rather than leaving them square — that is where cracks start. Equally important, the body still has to locate securely on its posts and clips. It is easy, chasing weight, to trim too close to a mounting tab; a shell that shifts under speed is worse than one a gram or two heavier, since a loose body changes weight distribution unpredictably mid-run instead of by a known amount.

Trimming as a weight decision, not just a clearance one

Once clearance is sorted, further trimming becomes a weight call, and weight only matters relative to the 90g class floor. A car already close to that minimum has little room to trim further without adding ballast back, rarely worth the extra work. A heavier build has more genuine headroom: trimming there frees weight to place deliberately, low and central for a lower centre of gravity, or as the base for a mass damper rather than removed outright. Weigh the shell before and after a significant trim so you know what you actually gained.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reshape a body panel to reduce drag, not just trim for clearance?

Cutting away material is permitted as long as the part's original shape stays identifiable — reshaping into a different outline is not. Stock Class is stricter still: body work is limited to shaving down and cutting away genuine obstructions. Confirm current wording before assuming a modification is legal for your event.

Do I need to follow the printed lines on a polycarbonate body exactly?

Under Stock Class rules, yes — cut as instructed in the kit manual. Freehand reshaping beyond those lines isn't permitted, and offcuts can't be repurposed as separate pieces.

My car is already close to the 90g minimum — should I still trim the body?

Trim for clearance regardless — a shell fouling a roller is a handling problem independent of weight. Trimming purely for weight savings only helps with margin above 90g to spend; below that, extra cutting just means adding ballast back.
