Mini 4WD Chassis Compatibility Guide

"Will this part fit my chassis?" has a factual answer, and it starts with the chassis code moulded into the plastic, not the body on top of it. Tamiya currently sells more than a dozen active chassis platforms, and each one has its own wheelbase, motor-shaft format and hole pattern for stays, gearbox covers and battery holders. This guide is the reference table itself — wheelbase, motor-shaft type, representative kits and the part categories that are chassis-specific for the platforms you'll actually meet on a shop shelf today. The compatibility reference table

Figures below are Tamiya's published specifications from the official chassis and compatible-parts catalogue. Ground clearance and gear ratio are as moulded from the factory before you change gears or tyres, and Tamiya itself notes these shift once you swap parts — treat them as a baseline for identification, not a promise about your finished car.

Two things stand out immediately. First, wheelbase is not a reliable proxy for chassis family — ME, MA, MS, VZ, VS and Zero all share an 80mm wheelbase despite being mechanically incompatible with each other, so wheelbase alone never confirms a fit. Second, motor shaft type splits the whole range in two: ME, MA and MS take a double-shaft motor that drives all four wheels directly with no propeller shaft, while VZ, AR, VS, Super-XX, Zero and FM-A take a single-shaft motor driving through a separate propeller shaft and gearbox. A double-shaft motor physically cannot be fitted to a single-shaft chassis and vice versa — this is the first and most absolute compatibility check on any part list, covered in more depth in the motor spec guide.

Why parts are chassis-specific even when the numbers look similar

Wheelbase and ground clearance describe the car's stance, not the fixing points that hold an option part on. Tamiya's official option parts are named for a reason: a part such as the FRP Wide Front Plate is sold as a VZ-chassis version and separately as a Fully-Cowled version, because screw-hole spacing, chassis rib clearance and body-mount tabs differ between the moulds even when the wheelbase matches. The same logic applies to gearbox covers, battery holder caps and rear-skid plates — each is moulded to the specific chassis shell, not to a wheelbase figure. A stay that shares roller-hole spacing with another chassis' stay can still fail to seat flush if the mounting boss positions differ by a millimetre, which is enough to tilt a roller out of alignment. That's the mechanism behind most "it doesn't fit" reports: the part matched on roller spacing but not on the chassis-specific screw bosses around it.

Single-shaft chassis carry a second point of chassis-specificity double-shaft chassis don't have: the propeller shaft. VZ, AR, VS, Super-XX, Zero and FM-A all drive an axle through a plastic propeller shaft turned by bevel gears, and that shaft's length and gear-cover shape are sized to that chassis' internal geometry. A propeller shaft from one single-shaft chassis is not a safe assumption for another, even though both are "single-shaft" in the broad sense used above.

What actually crosses chassis families, and what doesn't

Not every part on the car is chassis-locked. Wheels, tyres and most roller barrels are dimensioned to axle diameter and roller-shaft diameter, both standardised across the current range, so they're the most portable parts in the box. Motors are portable within their shaft family — any double-shaft PRO motor fits any double-shaft chassis, any single-shaft motor fits any single-shaft chassis — but never across that divide. What does not cross freely: stays and plates (chassis-specific screw bosses), gearbox covers and cases (moulded to the internal gear layout), propeller shafts (single-shaft chassis only, length-specific), and battery holders or rear-skid plates in most cases. How to check a part before you buy it

Work from the chassis, not the wish list. First, read the name moulded into the chassis underside, or check the kit box and instruction sheet — a body shell alone isn't proof of chassis, since the same body can be released on more than one platform over the years. Second, confirm shaft type: single or double. That single check eliminates roughly half of Tamiya's current option-part catalogue immediately. Third, read the option part's own product name and instruction sheet — Tamiya prints the intended chassis or chassis family directly on packaging for stays, plates, gearbox covers and propeller shafts, precisely because these aren't universal. Fourth, dry-fit before you trim, glue or paint anything permanent; a part that technically bolts on can still clash with a roller, body clip or another part already mounted.

Frequently asked questions

If two chassis share the same wheelbase, can I assume their parts interchange?

No. ME, MA, MS, VZ, VS and Zero all share an 80mm wheelbase in the table above, and none of their stays, gearbox covers or propeller shafts are interchangeable with each other. Wheelbase only describes axle spacing, not the mounting geometry around it.

Does a part that "fits" also mean it's legal for my race class?

No — fit and legality are separate questions. A part can bolt on cleanly and still be restricted under Stock Class or a local organiser's rules. Confirm both the product's stated compatibility and the current official rules and technical inspection checklist before an event; organiser rules and on-day inspection are the final authority, not this list.

My car is an older Super-series or Type chassis — does this table still apply?

The same principle applies (check shaft type and read the part's stated chassis compatibility first), but Tamiya's official catalogue lists several further single-shaft, rear-motor chassis beyond what's shown here — Super-TZ, Super-TZ-X, Super-X, Super-II, Super-1, and the numbered Type 1 through Type 5 chassis, each with its own wheelbase and gear ratio. Treat any part for one of these as chassis-specific until the packaging confirms otherwise.
