Every Mini 4WD kit ships with a chassis already decided, but once you start swapping kits or planning your second car, chassis choice becomes the biggest single decision in the hobby. It sets your motor family, gear ratio options, how the car takes a jump, and which option parts bolt on. What actually changes when you switch chassis
Two structural facts decide almost everything else. First, motor position: midship (between the axles), rear, or front. Moving mass toward one end shifts how the car pitches on a jump landing and how much grip is on the driven wheels through a corner. Second, motor shaft type: Tamiya's current midship chassis — ME, MA and MS — are dual-shaft and belong to the Mini 4WD PRO line, driving all four wheels directly with no propeller shaft. Every rear- and front-motor chassis (VZ, AR, FM-A, and older lines like Super-II, Super-X and the Type series) is single-shaft, driving through a separate prop shaft instead. The two motor families are not interchangeable: a PRO chassis needs a PRO motor or the kit-included normal motor, and Tamiya's official regulations hold PRO machines to that stricter motor list specifically. This one fact — dual-shaft or not — should be the first filter in any chassis decision, before body style or looks.
Midship dual-shaft: ME, MA and MS (Mini 4WD PRO)
MA is a single-piece monocoque frame with six low-friction rollers and a rear skid bar molded in as standard — rigid, simple to build straight from the box, and forgiving of an imperfect first build, which is why it is the most common recommendation for a first serious car. ME is the newer PRO platform, built around six rollers and separately molded front and rear bumper sections, giving a slightly different weight and repair profile from MA while sharing the same dual-shaft drivetrain. MS is the odd one out structurally: it splits into three units — nose, center and tail — that attach and detach independently. That sectional design is what makes MS Flex tuning possible later, where the joints between sections are deliberately allowed to work as a shock absorber. Don't chase MS for that reason on a first build, though — the extra joints mean extra things that can loosen, and that flex needs deliberate tuning or it costs consistency rather than gaining speed.
Rear-motor and front-motor standard chassis: VZ, AR and FM-A
VZ is rear-motor, single-shaft, compact and light, with reinforced bumper and rear-stay-base sections and low-friction 620 bearings molded in POM. It is currently one of the most widely kitted chassis in Tamiya's standard lineup, which means the best parts availability and the easiest time finding a specific body already fitted to it — a real advantage for a beginner who wants to focus on driving, not sourcing. VZ chassis tuning covers its shorter wheelbase once you're past the basics. AR, also rear-motor, was the first Tamiya chassis to standardise six rollers and carries its batteries in a notably low position, helping keep the centre of gravity down on faster, flatter layouts. FM-A puts the motor at the front instead, with a low-friction front skid bar and thicker 8mm rear rollers for stability; moving that mass forward changes braking feel and nose behaviour on a jump landing, which is why front-motor cars are generally more technical to drive well and tend to suit tighter, corner-heavy courses better than long straights.
Older single-shaft chassis (Super-II, Super-X/XX, Super TZ/TZ-X, the Type series and Zero) remain fully legal to race and are still supported with option parts — a well-tuned older chassis in an experienced builder's hands regularly beats a new chassis in an inexperienced one. Chassis age is not the deciding factor to optimise first; build quality and tuning consistency are.

The gap in kit price between racing chassis types is usually small next to what you'll spend on option parts over a season, so pick on drivetrain and layout fit first, not sticker price. The real budget exception is Tamiya's EZ Chassis (FUN-VROOM line): snap-together with no cement or screws, running on a single AA battery through a 50:1 gear ratio for torque over top speed, with off-road tyres and a transparent tinted housing so you can see the gears turn. It suits a younger or first-time builder well, but it's a different product line and not the one to buy if the goal is club or official racing.
Frequently asked questions
Is MA or VZ the better first chassis?
Both are reasonable, and it matters less than finishing a clean first build. MA's monocoque frame is slightly more forgiving to assemble straight and true; VZ is currently kitted in more body/livery combinations, so it's often the easier one to find in the specific car you want. Either teaches the fundamentals fine.
Can I put a PRO motor in a VZ or AR chassis, or a standard motor in an MA?
No. PRO motors are double-shaft and drive all four wheels directly with no propeller shaft; standard motors are single-shaft and rely on one. Do the official regulations apply the same way to every chassis?
Core dimension, weight and battery rules apply across chassis types — under current official regulations, cars must stay within roughly 165mm length, 105mm width and 70mm height, weigh at least 90g complete, run only Tamiya-branded AA batteries, and keep all four wheels driven. Mini 4WD PRO chassis additionally face a stricter permitted-motor list than standard chassis, and Stock Class and BMAX layer further restrictions on top.
