Classic Mini 4WD Conversion Kit Guide
A "classic Mini 4WD conversion" in the sense covered here is a specific job: taking a body sold for an older chassis — anything from Type 1 through Type 5, the Super-1/Super-II generation, or the Super X, Super XX and Super TZ / Super TZ-X rear-motor chassis — and fitting it onto a current chassis: typically VZ or AR (rear motor), FM-A (front motor), or MA, MS and ME (midship, double-shaft). Why move an old body onto new hardware
Tamiya's first Mini 4WD kit shipped in July 1982, and the series had sold past 100 million units by December 1995 — decades separate an original Type 1 or Super-1 build from a current VZ, AR or MS chassis. The practical case for converting is parts supply: current chassis take current gears, bearings, motors and tyres, far easier to source than consumables for a discontinued platform, and gain refinements such as, on MA, MS and ME chassis, a double-shaft layout driving all four wheels with no propeller shaft. None of that touches the body; the job is making an old shell sit correctly, and stay fastened, on hardware it was never designed for.
Match the body to a chassis family before you buy anything
Tamiya's chassis catalogue groups every chassis by motor layout, and that is the first filter, because a body's floor cutouts and wheel-well shape were designed around one specific layout:

A body designed for a rear-motor Super-series chassis will generally clear a current VZ or AR chassis, which keeps the same layout, far more easily than an MA or MS chassis, where the motor and gearbox sit under a different part of the shell. Fit the body before you fasten or trim anything
Once you have a chassis from the right motor-layout family, dry-fit before doing anything irreversible:
- Locate the body's mounting posts and catches against the chassis's factory catch positions. Layouts changed across generations, so an early Super-series body will not always drop straight onto a VZ or AR chassis.
- Seat the body with wheels and tyres fitted, not bare, and check arch clearance — old arches were cut for period tyre profiles, not necessarily what you run now.
- Check ground clearance with the body seated and fastened; events require at least 1mm, and a body sitting too low is a common reason a conversion fails inspection.
- Mark, don't cut: pencil or tape where a catch, post or arch needs relief before a blade touches the body.
Weight, dimensions and the size envelope you're building inside
Whatever combination you settle on has to sit inside the same envelope as any Mini 4WD under Tamiya's official regulations: width under 105mm, height under 70mm, length under 165mm, and a minimum weight of 90g including motor and battery. Tyres must fall between 22-35mm diameter and 8-26mm width, and only Tamiya-branded AA batteries are permitted. A heavily trimmed body with light wheels and a small motor can occasionally undershoot the 90g minimum — worth checking on a scale before race day. The body must also be genuine Tamiya, carrying stickers or paint and securely fastened; home-made bodies are not permitted, but a genuine body trimmed to fit a different chassis is not treated as one built from scratch.
What you may cut: body versus chassis, Stock Class versus open racing
This is where conversions most often go wrong: the allowance differs for body and chassis, and differs again under Stock Class. General regulations let chassis material be cut or drilled if the original shape stays identifiable — but Stock Class forbids cutting or shaving the chassis, bans home-made chassis, and forbids new screw holes, allowing only countersinking existing ones. Body alterations under Stock Class are narrower but real: shaving and removing obstructing sections is allowed. A Stock-legal conversion relies on factory-molded catches as they are and trims the body instead; an open-class build has more room on the chassis, but "recognisably the original shape" is still the test, and the organiser's inspection on the day makes the final call, not any article. One current chassis to rule out for this job
Not every current chassis suits this job. Can I fit any old body onto any current chassis?
Not reliably. Start from the motor-layout family — rear motor, front motor, or midship double-shaft — the body was designed for; that decides whether the floor and wheel wells can clear the new chassis before you even check catch positions.
Is chassis cutting allowed in a conversion?
