Are 3D-Printed Mini 4WD Parts Legal? What the Rules Say
No Tamiya or BMAX rule sheet has a line that says "no 3D-printed parts." None needs one. The Official Race Regulations, the Official Stock Class Regulations and Basic-MAX GP v5.0 each restrict additional or replacement parts to a closed list — Tamiya Mini 4WD, R/C Mini 4WD and Dangun Racer parts only — which excludes a home-fabricated part by definition, whatever it was made with. The rule that does the actual work: a closed parts list
The Official Race Regulations state plainly that "parts used for modification are limited to Tamiya Mini 4WD, R/C Mini 4WD, and Dangun Racer parts only." The Stock Class regulations repeat the same restriction, and Basic-MAX GP v5.0's own Article 6 states additional parts are "限定タミヤ製" — limited to Tamiya-brand Mini 4WD, RC 4WD and Dangun parts only. A 3D-printed gear, a hand-cut FRP plate of your own design, or a metal part you machined yourself are all excluded the same way under all three rulesets: not because of how they were made, but because they aren't a Tamiya, RC Mini 4WD or Dangun Racer part. This is worth knowing precisely, because "3D printing isn't mentioned" is sometimes read as "3D printing isn't addressed" — it's addressed, just not by name.
Homemade chassis and bodies are banned separately, and explicitly
Beyond the closed parts list, all three regulations separately name and prohibit homemade chassis. The Official regulations state it outright; Stock Class repeats "cutting and shaving down of the chassis is not allowed. Homemade chassis are also prohibited"; BMAX v5's Article 6 bans chassis hollowing, cutting and homemade-chassis use in the same clause. Bodies get a narrower allowance: the Official regulations require a body to be painted or stickered, explicitly prohibiting a homemade body, while Stock Class limits body modification to "shaving it down, and cutting away parts which are an obstruction." A 3D-printed body shell you designed yourself falls under the same homemade-body prohibition as a hand-built one.
What is actually legal to do at home
Modifying a genuine Tamiya part you already own is the space these rules leave open. The Official Race Regulations' Item 6 limits part modification to "cutting away the material or making holes in the stock part," with one binding condition: "the original part shape must be clearly identifiable." That covers drilling weight-relief holes, trimming a body for clearance, or shaving a plate — as long as what you end up with still reads as the same part, not a redesigned one. Stock Class's own FAQ confirms plates specifically may be cemented together for reinforcement ("yes"), and multiple plates may be cemented ("yes") — but plate edges may not be tapered ("no"), and discarded sprues or polycarbonate offcuts may not be reused. None of this requires a 3D printer or a workshop; it requires stock Tamiya parts and a hobby knife or drill.
BMAX v5 adds numeric thresholds on top
Basic-MAX GP v5.0, effective 1 June 2026, layers extra restrictions onto the same closed-parts foundation. Its Article 3 fine rules treat a mass-damper hole of 3mm or more, or a tyre or roller diameter change of 1mm or more, as "processing" rather than ordinary wear — meaning a part altered past that threshold needs to be declared or may be rejected at inspection, even though the same regulation still permits some hollowing and interference cutting on bodies. A part that would pass casual inspection under the Official regulations can still fail a BMAX-specific measurement. Why "not mentioned" is the wrong test
None of these three documents needs a 3D-printing clause because the parts list is closed by brand, not by manufacturing method — the same logic that already excludes a hand-filed part, a resin-cast part, or a part bought from a third-party aftermarket brand. If you're building for an event under any of these three rule sets, the working question isn't "does the rule mention 3D printing" — it's "is this a genuine Tamiya, RC Mini 4WD or Dangun Racer part, unmodified beyond cutting/holing with its original shape identifiable." A local shop race that borrows the word "BMAX" or "Stock" may still publish its own, different rule sheet — always confirm with the organiser before an event, per the official rules and inspection checklist.
