How to Build Your First Tamiya Mini 4WD
Every Mini 4WD kit — from a 1980s reissue to a current VZ or MA chassis — goes together with a screwdriver, a cutter, and about an hour of careful work. It runs the moment the last screw is tight; whether it runs straight, quiet and fast for the next hundred laps depends on four things you do during that hour: how you remove parts from the sprue, how you seat the bearings, how you set the gear mesh, and whether you test-roll the chassis before adding a single option part.
What is in the box, and which chassis you have
A standard kit ships a sprue tree (chassis, gearbox covers, wheels), a polycarbonate or ABS body, tyres, a pinion and spur/crown gear pair sized to the kit's ratio, a bag of screws and bushings (or ball bearings on premium kits), and a stock FA-130 motor. Modern kits are snap-fit throughout; older reissues may call for polystyrene cement on the body only, never the chassis.
Tamiya's current lineup includes MA, MS, VZ, AR and FM-A chassis, plus the beginner-oriented EZ Chassis used in kits like FUN-VROOM (item 19024). The EZ Chassis snaps together with no cement or screws, runs on one AA battery instead of two, and gears down to roughly 50:1, trading top speed for climbing torque. Every other current chassis is a two-battery race chassis: MS and ME are midship dual-shaft, VZ and AR are rear-motor, FM-A is front-motor. Cutting parts from the sprue
Small chassis parts — bushings, gear covers, pins — attach to the sprue by a thin gate. Cut with a sprue cutter close to the part but not flush, leaving a small stub, then shave it flat with a hobby knife or flat file. Cutting flush against the part risks the cutter's opposite jaw denting the plastic where it presses, leaving a raised lump exactly where the part needs to seat flat — most often a bearing or bushing housing. This is the most common reason a fresh kit binds or wobbles: not a bad part, but an uncleaned sprue gate.
Bearings, bushings and axle seating
Standard kits use plastic bushings pressed into the chassis and gear-cover housings; many premium kits substitute 620-size ball bearings. Either way the part must sit flush and square, not tilted. A bearing seated at even a slight angle binds the axle under load, costing more speed than any motor upgrade recovers, since it fights the drivetrain on every rotation rather than only at peak load. Press bearings in square against the housing, not the axle, then spin the axle by hand — it should turn freely with no catch point. Setting the gear mesh
Most first builds go wrong in the gearbox, because too-tight mesh is invisible until you spin the drivetrain by hand. Before fitting the motor, assemble the gear train into the gearbox halves as the instructions show, close it, and turn a wheel by hand. Correctly meshed gears turn with a light, even, almost silent resistance — a faint whirr. A grinding feel means the mesh is too tight, usually a gearbox half not fully closed or a gear off its shaft seat; a rattle or click means it is too open, usually a half not seated flush. Reseat and recheck rather than pressing on — the stock FA-130 has little torque to fight a binding gearbox, and this is one problem no later tuning fixes. Regulation limits worth knowing early
You don't need to chase every limit on a first build, but it helps to know they exist. Tamiya's official race regulations cap machines at under 105mm width, under 70mm height and under 165mm length, with at least 1mm ground clearance and a minimum total weight — including motor and batteries — of at least 90g. Tyres must measure 22–35mm in diameter and 8–26mm in width, and track lanes are 115mm wide on a straight with 50mm walls. Only Tamiya-branded AA (R6/UM3) batteries are permitted, and the permitted-motor list covers the stock motor plus most Tuned and Dash-series motors — a small number of the highest-output Dash motors are excluded from official tournaments. Test-roll before you add anything
Once chassis, gearbox, wheels and tyres are assembled — before rollers, brakes, mass dampers or a body — set the bare rolling chassis on a flat table and give it a gentle push. It should track straight and coast without curving off or stopping abruptly. A pull to one side almost always traces to uneven wheel/tyre diameter left-to-right, an off-square bushing, or a tyre not fully seated; a car that stops dead usually has a binding bearing or a gear-mesh issue from the previous step. Fix what you find here first — every part bolted on afterward assumes a straight, freely-rolling chassis underneath it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need cement to build a Mini 4WD kit?
Most current kits are entirely snap-fit for the chassis and gearbox — no cement needed anywhere structural. Some kits call for a little polystyrene cement on the body only; never cement chassis or gearbox parts, since several are designed to be removable for maintenance and upgrades.
My car pulls to one side when I roll it. What do I check first?
Check left-versus-right tyre diameter and that both tyres are fully seated on their wheels, then check that both bushings/bearings on the affected axle sit flush and square. Uneven wheel diameter and an off-square bushing are the two most common causes, well ahead of anything motor-related.
Is the stock FA-130 motor worth running before I upgrade?
Yes — running it for your first few packs lets a new gearbox and fresh bearings bed in under low torque before you introduce a Tuned or Dash motor's higher RPM and current draw. It also isolates drivetrain problems from motor problems while you're still learning to spot them by ear and by hand.
