Mini 4WD Hyper-Dash 3 Motor Guide

Hyper-Dash 3 is the motor most Mini 4WD racers mean when they say “put a Dash in it.” It is not the fastest motor Tamiya sells, and it is not a dual-shaft PRO motor. It is item 15477, a carbon-brush single-shaft unit whose published load figures sit in the middle of the Dash ladder: enough RPM to matter on a real course, enough torque to recover after a corner or a landing, and a current draw two AA cells can usually live with for a heat. This guide is the decision page the overview table cannot be — what the numbers actually are, which cars it fits, how to pair a gear ratio as a test rather than a religion, and how it differs from Hyper-Dash PRO and the Japan Cup 2026 commemorative.

What Tamiya actually publishes for 15477

The English Hyper-Dash 3 product page lists input voltage 2.4–3.0 V (two AA cells), torque at recommended load 1.4–1.9 mN·m, 17,200–21,200 RPM, and 1.6–3.0 A current consumption. Those RPM and current figures are at recommended load, not free-spin on the bench. Tamiya describes it as a successor to Hyper-Dash 2 and as a motor that balances speed and longevity across a variety of courses. The Japanese 15477 page specifies silver carbon brushes; the English page does not name the brush. The commemorative 95182 page states the pinion is sold separately — treat 15477 the same way: the motor in the blister is not a drop-in complete drivetrain. Single-shaft only — it will not go in an MS, MA or ME

The English product page says compatible cars are “Mini 4WD cars.” The chassis tags on that page are the single-shaft families: VZ, AR, Super-II, Super X/XX, FM-A, VS and the older Type and Super FM/TZ layouts. Mini 4WD PRO cars (MS, MA, ME) take a double-shaft motor that drives all four wheels directly. Hyper-Dash 3 is not that motor. If your kit is an MS Emperor, an MA Avante or an ME, you want Hyper-Dash Motor PRO (15375), not 15477. Fitting the wrong shaft family is not a tuning choice; the motor will not seat. Gear pairing is a hypothesis, not a sticker on the box

A 17,200–21,200 RPM motor still has to turn a specific gear set on a specific course. Lower numerical ratios (around 3.5:1, which is what many VZ kits including Iron Beak ship with) favour top speed on long straights; higher numerical ratios (4.2:1, 4.5:1, 5:1 where the chassis offers them) favour acceleration out of corners and recovery after a jump. Hyper-Dash 3 is popular because that range can do both jobs if the ratio matches the layout. It is a poor first experiment on a brand-new gearbox: run the kit motor long enough to seat the gears, then change one thing. Log the course type, the ratio, and whether the car finished. Hyper-Dash PRO is not the same spec sheet

Hyper-Dash Motor PRO, item 15375, is the dual-shaft counterpart for MA and MS (ME appears in its chassis tags). Tamiya’s 15375 page does not reprint Hyper-Dash 3’s range. It publishes RPM at recommended load as 17,200 and torque at recommended load as 0.98 mN·m (10 g/cm), with a red end bell, and it also requires separately sold 8T pinions. Treat 15477 and 15375 as two products. If a chart tells you they are identical, prefer the product page for the motor in your hand. Japan Cup 2026 commemorative 95182

Hyper-Dash 3 Motor J-CUP 2026 (item 95182) is mechanically identical to 15477 — what distinguishes it is the black JAPAN CUP 2026 motor label and a commemorative backing card; both motors carry the same red end bell. The published numbers on the 95182 page are the same 17,200–21,200 RPM, 1.4–1.9 mN·m and 1.6–3.0 A. Tamiya states it is not compatible with Mini 4WD PRO cars, and the pinion is still sold separately. Buy 95182 if you want the commemorative item. Do not expect a hidden performance step over 15477 from the label and the card.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hyper-Dash 3 the fastest legal motor?

No. On the standard (single-shaft) ladder, Power-Dash and Sprint-Dash publish higher RPM ranges. Hyper-Dash 3 is the usual race choice because the current draw and torque band are usable on mixed courses, not because it tops the spec sheet. Recheck the official motor list before an event — that list can change, and Mach-Dash is a separate PRO-side question.

Can I run Hyper-Dash 3 in BMAX?

Basic-MAX GP’s own FAQ currently says Dash-type motors are allowed under that sheet, and Tamiya Stock Class says the same. A Malaysian shop race that uses the word BMAX may still publish a different motor list. Read the event PDF. See BMAX rules 2026.

Should I jump straight from the kit motor to Hyper-Dash 3?

Usually no. The Tuned motors (Torque / Atomic / Rev-Tuned 2) are the gentler first step. If the gearbox is still tight, a Dash motor only hides the friction as heat. Build the car so it rolls, then step up. Browse motors in the motors category after you know the shaft family.
