Breaking in a new Tamiya Mini 4WD motor means running it electrically before its first race — not opening the can to hand-seat the brushes the way many RC disciplines do. That distinction is the whole story: Tamiya's own regulations make disassembly-based break-in illegal, so every legal method has to work through the two battery terminals alone. What break-in actually changes

A Mini 4WD motor is a brushed DC can motor: two spring-loaded brushes press against a rotating commutator, and that sliding contact is how current reaches the spinning armature coils. A brush leaves the factory with a flat or lightly pre-formed face, but the commutator it presses against is a true cylinder — so on a brand-new motor, the brush only touches a narrow strip of that curve, not the full contact width the design assumes. Two different things people call "break-in"

That is mechanical seating of gear teeth and bushings under load on the actual chassis — it happens automatically the first time the car runs, with no separate procedure needed. Motor break-in, described above, is specific to the brush-commutator contact inside the can and can be done off the chassis entirely, on a bench, before the motor ever touches a gear. A new car benefits from both happening, but neither substitutes for the other: a freshly broken-in motor still needs its first few packs to settle the drivetrain, and a well broken-in gearbox does nothing for a motor whose brushes haven't seated.

Reading the signs without opening the case
