Mini 4WD Motors Explained
"Which Tamiya motor is fastest?" is the wrong first question. Roughly a dozen and a half motors currently ship across the standard and PRO Mini 4WD ranges, and the useful comparison is torque against RPM against current draw, not a single top-speed number. Below are both current motor lineups with their published specifications, followed by a plain answer to "which one do I actually buy."
How to read a Tamiya motor spec
Standard chassis (rear-motor and front-motor cars) take a single-shaft motor and drive the wheels through a separate propeller shaft. Mini 4WD PRO chassis (MS, MA, ME and similar dual-shaft cars) take a double-shaft PRO motor that drives all four wheels directly with no propeller shaft — the two motor families are not interchangeable, so confirm your chassis type before buying. Motors also split by brush material: the Tuned series (Torque-Tuned 2, Atomic-Tuned 2, Rev-Tuned 2) plus Light-Dash and Light-Dash PRO use cheaper, gentler copper brushes, while the Dash series from Hyper-Dash 3 upward use carbon brushes that handle higher RPM and current at higher cost and faster wear. Tamiya publishes RPM, torque and current as ranges rather than single numbers because output shifts with battery condition and motor wear — treat every figure below as a comparison baseline, not a guarantee for any individual unit.

There is no PRO equivalent of Power-Dash or Sprint-Dash — Mach-Dash PRO is currently the fastest motor legal for dual-shaft racing.
Which motor for which situation
- Brand-new chassis: run the stock FA-130 for the first few packs to break in the gearbox and bearings before fitting anything faster.
- First upgrade: a Tuned motor — Atomic-Tuned 2 for a balanced all-rounder, Torque-Tuned 2 for hilly or technical sections, Rev-Tuned 2 for a little more top speed while staying gentle on the battery.
- More speed without jumping to carbon brushes: Light-Dash or Light-Dash PRO.
- Winding, technical racing: Hyper-Dash 3 (standard) or Hyper-Dash PRO (double-shaft) — the most popular all-round competitive motor on both ladders.
- Speed and torque together, single-shaft only: Power-Dash.
- Maximum legal top speed: Sprint-Dash (standard) or Mach-Dash PRO (double-shaft).
- Casual bashing or speed runs, not official racing: Ultra-Dash or Plasma-Dash.
Current draw, heat and race legality
Current draw matters more here than it does in full-size RC, because two AA cells have far less to give than an RC LiPo pack. Ultra-Dash and Plasma-Dash draw roughly double a Dash-tier motor and close to five times the stock motor's 1.1 A — even a fresh, high-quality pair of cells sags under that load far faster than under a Tuned motor. Ultra-Dash, Plasma-Dash and the discontinued Jet-Dash are likewise absent from official Tamiya tournaments — they do not appear on the permitted-motor list, and the regulations give no reason for their omission; every other motor listed above remains on the permitted list as of this research. Regulations and event classes change over time, so confirm the current official permitted-motor list and Stock Class rules before entering a sanctioned race — do not rely on a chart alone, including this one.
Frequently asked questions
Is a faster motor always better?
No. A high-RPM motor that never reaches its usable range on a short or technical course can be slower than a torque-biased motor paired with the right gear ratio. Match the motor to the course and the ratio, not just to the spec sheet.
Can I fit a PRO motor in a normal chassis, or the reverse?
No. PRO motors are double-shaft and drive all four wheels directly; standard motors are single-shaft and drive through a propeller shaft. Check which family your chassis uses before buying a motor by name.
Why do Hyper-Dash 3 and Hyper-Dash PRO share the same numbers?
They are the same motor built for the two different shaft formats, so Tamiya publishes identical RPM, torque and current ranges for both.
