Mini 4WD Motors Explained

Tamiya motors form a ladder from the stock Normal motor up to high-output Dash-class units, and the right one depends on the track and the class.

Torque against RPM

Torque-biased motors accelerate hard out of corners and pull well through banked sections. High-RPM motors reach a higher top speed but need a longer straight to use it. Most tracks reward the former more than people expect.

Current draw and heat

Faster motors pull more current, drain batteries quicker and run hotter. Heat degrades performance within a single run, so a motor that is fastest on lap one may not be on lap five.

Match to gearing

A motor is only as good as its gear ratio. Fitting a high-RPM motor without changing the ratio often makes a car slower, because it never reaches its usable range.

Class restrictions

Stock and B-MAX-style classes limit which motors are legal. Check before buying, because the fastest motor available is frequently not allowed.
