MS Chassis Tuning Guide: Basic to MS Flex
The MS chassis is Tamiya's three-piece midship platform for Mini 4WD PRO: a direct-drive, double-shaft design split into nose, centre and tail units that unclip for maintenance instead of forming one rigid tub. That modularity is the whole point of MS — and why a badly assembled MS car is harder to diagnose than a one-piece chassis, since a fault can hide at any joint. What the MS chassis actually is
Tamiya's chassis catalogue describes MS as a "direct drive, double-shaft motor" chassis with a "3-piece set up split into nose, center and tail units for easy attachment and detachment," crediting the 80mm wheelbase with "an advantage through corners." Published specifications, valid with the kit's N-02 unit, large-diameter tyres and alkaline batteries, are:

Tamiya's own note: "use of other components may alter values" — swap the front unit, rear unit, tyre diameter or battery type and every figure above shifts. Treat a unit swap as a new baseline to measure, not an upgrade to assume.
Front and rear units: why "MS" is not one fixed setup
Because the nose, centre and tail separate cleanly, Tamiya sells the front and rear sections as their own option parts, and racers commonly refer to them by generation — N1 and N2 front units, T1 and T2 rear units — reflecting revisions to gear cover fit, bearing seats and body-mount points since the original MS kits. Two cars both labelled "MS chassis" can have different roller mounting points, gear cover clearance and weight, purely from unit generation. Build-quality basics before any tuning
Every MS build should pass the same checks before a single tuning part is added, because the three-unit joint is the platform's main source of inconsistency:
- Seat the units squarely. Press nose, centre and tail fully together and check for gaps at each joint — a unit sitting proud on one side throws off ride height and roller symmetry.
- Confirm the gear cover closes without stress. A cover that only closes under force is usually flagging a gear mesh problem, not a fit problem; forcing it shut masks the real fault.
- Spin every axle by hand and listen for a tight spot or grinding before fitting a faster motor — a stock FA-130 will not reveal a drivetrain fault that a Dash-class motor will expose.
- Break in the drivetrain on the stock motor for the first few packs so gears and bearings wear evenly, then move up the motor ladder.
Only once the chassis is quiet and square does it make sense to add rollers, stays and damping, and to match motor and gear ratio to the course.
MS against Tamiya's other midship chassis: MA and ME
MS is one of three double-shaft midship platforms Tamiya currently catalogues, alongside MA and ME. Comparing published specifications side by side shows where each one is actually different, rather than relying on reputation:

MS's 4mm ground clearance is the tallest of the three as supplied, part of why it suits rougher, jump-heavy courses. ME is the lightest and Tamiya markets it for "an outstanding combination of rigidity and flex," shipping with six rollers standard — see the ME chassis overview. MA has the widest tread, trading some cornering agility for stability. None of these differences make one platform objectively faster; treat a chassis-family swap the same as a unit-generation swap — a new car to re-baseline, not a straight upgrade.
Staying inside the rules
MS's modularity invites cutting and re-hinging, and that is where class rules bite hardest. Tamiya's Stock Class regulations state "cutting and shaving down of the chassis is not allowed" and "homemade chassis are also prohibited" — screw holes may be countersunk or drilled to 2mm, but the structure must stay as moulded. General regulations cap dimensions at 105mm width, 70mm height, 165mm length, set a 1mm minimum clearance and 90g minimum weight including battery and motor, and require any change to leave the part "clearly identifiable." Where MS Flex fits in
MS Flex is a cut-and-rehinged version of the three-unit MS chassis that lets the nose and tail articulate independently, absorbing rough or jump-heavy sections instead of passing every impact into the drivetrain. It builds on everything above — a square, quiet, correctly identified MS chassis — and because it involves cutting the chassis it is not legal in Stock Class or similar no-modification formats. Frequently asked questions
Do all MS chassis kits come with the same front and rear units?
No. Tamiya has released more than one generation of MS front and rear unit, commonly called N1/N2 and T1/T2 by racers, with different gear cover and mounting details. Identify the unit actually fitted before ordering compatibility-sensitive parts, rather than assuming from the "MS chassis" label alone.
Is a 4:1 gear ratio fixed on MS?
No. 4:1 is the ratio Tamiya publishes for MS as supplied with the N-02 unit, not a hard limit. Changing the gear set changes that number, and class rules — not the chassis — decide which ratios and combinations are legal, so confirm current rules before racing a modified ratio.
Should a beginner start with MS Flex?
No. Prove a stable, square, non-modified MS chassis first — quiet drivetrain, symmetrical rollers, a sensible motor and ratio. MS Flex adds cutting, hinges and springs on top of that baseline; skipping it makes it far harder to tell which change is helping or hurting.
