A Mini 4WD toolbox is a shorter list than most builders assume. This guide covers the tools and tool-tray consumables that stay in the box permanently — what to buy once, what to keep topped up, and why each one earns a slot. The core hand-tool kit

Every Tamiya kit assumes a small set of hand tools you already own. A cross-point (Phillips) precision driver sized to the kit's small chassis and body screws is the single most-used tool in the box — the driver molded into some starter kits works, but a knurled-grip precision driver resists cam-out far better once screws have been in and out a few times. A side cutter for trimming body sprues, flat and round needle files, fine tweezers for small springs and damper rubber, and a metal ruler or vernier calipers round out the everyday set.

Tools the rulebook effectively requires

Tamiya's official race regulations describe what processing is allowed, and that shapes which tools are worth owning. They permit "cutting away plastic material or cutting holes out of the stock chassis" and modifying parts by "cutting away the material or making holes," with one hard constraint: the original part shape must stay clearly identifiable — a hobby-knife-and-needle-file job, not a rotary tool taken to the whole part. Gear modification is called out specifically too: gears may be drilled or shaved to reduce weight and to fit ball bearings, which is precision pin-vise work, not something to eyeball freehand. Stock Class tightens this further — cutting or shaving the chassis itself is not allowed there, but drilling through an existing screw hole or widening it to 2mm is, and existing holes in FRP or carbon plates may be countersunk. A pin vise with a 2mm bit and a small countersink bit turn those specific allowances into clean work instead of a one-off mistake. Read the official race regulations and, for Stock Class entries, the Stock Class regulations yourself before cutting anything.

The same regulations set the numbers your measuring tools check: overall length under 165mm, width under 105mm, height under 70mm, ground clearance of at least 1mm, minimum weight of at least 90g including motor and battery, and tyre diameter 22-35mm with width 8-26mm. Setup and precision tools

A second tier of tools exists to make roller, bearing and brake setup repeatable instead of approximate. A bearing or wheel press seats 620-size ball bearings and wheel hubs squarely without cracking the hub or cocking the bearing — pressing either in by hand with pliers is exactly how a hub splits. An axle-straightening reference (a small V-block or plate) matters because a bent axle from a hard landing throws off wheel tracking in a way that's nearly invisible by eye but very visible in lap times. Feeler gauges or a ride-height gauge turn brake sponge and roller height into a number you dial and repeat between cars, instead of eyeballing it and hoping it matches last week's fast setup. None of this changes what the car is allowed to be — it changes whether the setup you intended is the one you built.

Adhesives, lubricants and finishing consumables

A short list of consumables belongs in the tool tray because they support the tools above, not because they're spare parts themselves. Plastic cement is worth keeping: Stock Class regulations explicitly permit reinforcing and cementing plates together, and cementing shafts into gears, so a small bottle of styrene cement does real, rules-legal work rather than sitting unused. A drop of thin CA glue is the standard fix for a tyre lifting off its hub. Light machine oil or a Mini 4WD-specific lubricant keeps bearings and gear mesh running quietly — heavy grease attracts dust and is the wrong tool here. Fine sandpaper or a polishing cloth clears oxidation and mould-release residue off rolling surfaces before it becomes drag. Keep these apart from your spares tray: a bottle of cement isn't a part you swap mid-heat, it's a tool you reach for during a rebuild.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a bearing press, or can I press bearings in by hand?

You can, but it's the most common way to crack a hub or seat a bearing crooked, which then shows up as a wobble or drag you can't diagnose without pulling it back out. A basic bearing press is inexpensive relative to the parts it protects, and it's one of the few tools here that directly prevents damage rather than enabling a modification.

Which driver size should I buy for a typical Tamiya kit?

Most current chassis and body screws are small cross-point screws around 2mm — the driver bundled with some starter kits is usable but not precise. A dedicated precision Phillips driver in that size, sold by Tamiya and general hobby-tool brands, cuts stripped screw heads far more than technique alone.

Are pin vises and drilling tools legal to use on a race car?

Drilling and hole-widening are permitted within specific limits under both the general regulations and Stock Class — widening an existing screw hole to 2mm is explicitly allowed in Stock Class, while cutting or shaving the chassis itself is not. The tool is legal; what you're allowed to do with it depends on the class you're entering, so confirm the current official regulations and Stock Class rules — and the organiser's event rules and on-day inspection, which always have final say — before drilling anything for competition.
