A Mini 4WD has no steering. The only thing keeping it pointed down the lane through a corner is the small plastic or aluminium wheel spinning against the track wall — the roller. Picking the right rollers is a hardware question: diameter, material, plain bushing or ball bearing, single or double. This guide covers exactly that. Roller diameters and what each size is actually for
Tamiya's roller range spans roughly 9mm to 19mm, and the size on the box is the outer diameter of the wheel that touches the wall — not the bearing or the shaft. A larger roller covers more wall surface per revolution, so it rides over the small step at a wall-panel joint more smoothly, which matters most at speed. The material choice is really three options, not two. Plain low-friction plastic rollers, like the ones in the 15381 set, spin directly on a bushing rather than a bearing — inexpensive and light, fine for a practice car that isn't under heavy load. Plastic ball-bearing rollers, such as the 13mm item 15551, look similar but have a sealed bearing pressed into the hub, so they keep spinning freely for far longer under repeated wall contact and grit. Aluminium ball-race rollers, like the 19mm item 95404, go further still: the body itself is machined aluminium rather than moulded plastic, so it holds its shape and true roundness under load better, on top of carrying the same bearing. Plastic is lighter and cheaper; aluminium is heavier and more durable — and a roller that stays true and spins freely matters more the faster and more often the car runs.
What "ball bearing" actually means inside a roller
Tamiya's 9mm Ball Bearings (item 15344, GP.344) are 9mm outer diameter, 3mm thick, held together with brass bushings and a screw through the middle — the mechanism sitting inside every "ball bearing type" roller regardless of diameter or body material. A bearing roller and a bushing roller can look identical from outside; the difference only shows up as drag when spun by hand. Spin any roller between your fingers before fitting it — one that doesn't turn freely will drag on every pass rather than rolling over it, and the usual cause is dirt or hardened lubricant inside the bearing, not a worn part.
Double rollers, rings, and what the rulebook actually restricts

Matching roller count to your chassis
How many rollers you need depends on the chassis. Tamiya's published chassis references note the ME chassis ships with six rollers as standard, the MA chassis carries six individual low-friction rollers plus a rear skid bar, the AR chassis was the first to use a six-roller layout, and the FM-A chassis runs a four-roller setup with distinctly thicker 8mm rear rollers.
