Mini 4WD and radio-controlled cars both start from the same idea — a small electric car with a motor, wheels and a battery — and that surface similarity is why people mix them up. Underneath, they solve opposite problems. An RC car is driven: a transmitter sends steering and throttle commands to a receiver in real time, and the driver corrects the line every second the car is moving. A Mini 4WD is not driven at all once it leaves your hand. Nothing corrects once released; the course wall and your rollers do the steering. Power source and drivetrain
Official Tamiya race regulations permit only Tamiya-branded R6/AA/UM3 batteries in sanctioned events — no third-party cells, no rechargeable packs. That pair of AAs drives a brushed motor through a fixed gear set; standard chassis (rear- and front-motor layouts) use a single-shaft motor through a propeller shaft, while PRO chassis such as MS, MA and ME use a double-shaft motor driving all four wheels directly. Gear ratios run roughly 3.5:1 to 5:1 depending on chassis — MS uses 4:1, VZ 3.5:1, FM/Super FM 5:1 or 4:1/4.2:1 — and regulations restrict which pinion and gear combinations are legal per chassis, so ratio is fixed at build time, not tuned mid-race. RC cars run rechargeable NiMH or LiPo packs at several times that voltage through a speed controller that varies power continuously — the real reason an RC car needs a driver and a Mini 4WD does not.

An RC car needs open floor space, a car park, an RC circuit or a purpose-built track, plus a safe distance from bystanders while it is being driven. A Mini 4WD needs a compatible rail course, compact enough for a hobby shop or club room, but that compactness does not make an improvised track automatically safe: keep hands clear of a running car and use proper barriers, since a car exiting a jump at speed is still a hard, fast-moving object.
Classes, modifications and technical inspection
Mini 4WD's official Stock Class permits Dash-series motors but requires battery terminals to be kit-standard or an approved Grade-Up part installed as instructed — soldering, double terminals and heating brake sponges to reshape them are all banned. Chassis cutting, disassembling a motor for its parts, and rollers outside permitted combinations are also prohibited, while body shaving, countersinking existing holes and cementing shafts into gears are explicitly allowed. A Mini 4WD kit, spare AA batteries and a small course session are a low, predictable cost, and ongoing spend goes on option parts — motors, gears, rollers, stays — rather than a transmitter, receiver, servo, ESC and charger. Can a Mini 4WD be steered by radio like an RC car?
Not in the standard hobby. Standard chassis have no receiver, servo or steering system — guidance comes entirely from rollers against the course rail. Tamiya separately sells radio-controlled Mini 4WD-styled products, but those are a distinct line with their own battery rules (alkaline only) and do not run on a fixed rail course.
