Mini 4WD Wheel Alignment Guide

A Mini 4WD that wobbles at the wheel loses speed on every rotation, not just on the straights. Runout — a wheel or tyre that does not spin true around its own axis — turns momentum into vibration, and on a banked or three-lane curve it can be enough to nudge a car off its line. Where post-assembly wobble actually comes from

Runout has three realistic sources, and treating all of them with the same fix wastes time. A bent axle shaft is least forgiving: once a steel axle takes a permanent set from a hard hit, no wheel adjustment straightens it, and Tamiya's official race regulations (R1) set no minimum service life on an axle, so a bent one is simply replaced. Second is a wheel pressed onto a straight axle at a slight angle — thumb pressure alone tends to start a wheel crooked, reading exactly like a bent axle on a spin test even though the axle is fine. Third is a warped or unevenly moulded tyre, which looks like wheel wobble even when the hub underneath is dead true. Isolating which of the three you have, before reaching for a tool, is the single biggest time-saver here.

Diagnose before you fix anything

Roll the bare axle across a flat, hard surface — a sheet of glass or a steel ruler works well — and watch from directly above; a bent axle rises and falls as it rolls, a straight one does not. Next, with the wheel off, spin the wheel-and-tyre assembly on a straight test shaft and sight the tyre's outer edge against a fixed reference. Movement that disappears once you strip the tyre off and check the bare hub means the tyre is at fault; movement that persists on the bare hub means the wheel was pressed on crooked.

Re-seating a crooked wheel

If the axle tests straight but the wheel still wobbles, the fix is mechanical, not cosmetic. Pull the wheel fully off — do not nudge it square while still seated, which usually just relocates the same crooked press to a slightly different angle. Fit it back on with a wheel press or wheel installer rather than a thumb: a press applies force straight down the axle's centreline, where a thumb applies uneven pressure that starts the wheel tilted before it seats. Push it on in one continuous motion until fully seated against its shoulder, then re-run the spin test. A wheel that still wobbles after a proper press re-seat points to wear inside the hub bore itself, and is usually cheaper to replace than to keep chasing.

Truing a tyre without breaking your gearing

A tyre that wobbles only with the rubber fitted is trued by spinning the wheel-and-tyre assembly — on the axle in a drill, or a dedicated truing tool — and lightly sanding the tread until the outer edge runs concentric with the axle. This has a real cost: truing removes material, shrinking the tyre's outer diameter. Tamiya's official race regulations (R1) cap tyre diameter at 22–35mm and width at 8–26mm as fitted, and the general rules permit cutting within those limits, while the Stock Class rules (R2) forbid cutting or shaving tyres outright — so true conservatively, re-measure against those limits, and only in a class that allows it. What is normal, not what is wrong

Not every visible difference between wheels is a fault. Tamiya's chassis and compatible-parts catalogue (R3) publishes different front and rear tread widths as standard on several chassis — VZ runs 59.5mm front and 65.5mm rear, MS runs 67mm front and 69mm rear — so a car that looks wider at one axle by design is not misaligned. The Stock Class regulations (R2) also permit combining tyres and wheels of different sizes on the same car, so a deliberate front-to-rear diameter mismatch is a legal choice, not a defect. The two rule sets split on cutting: the general regulations permit cutting tyre material within the size limits, while Stock Class forbids cutting or shaving tyres outright — which makes truing an Open-class practice, not a Stock Class one — and a wheel that visibly wobbles under inspection is a fail, so organiser rules and on-the-day technical inspection have final say; check the current official regulations and Stock Class rules, or see the technical inspection checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bent axle be straightened instead of replaced?

Not reliably. A steel axle that has taken a permanent bend tends to relax back toward it under load even after a careful attempt, and a Mini 4WD axle is inexpensive enough that replacement is the more consistent fix.

My wheel wobbles right after I built the car — did I do something wrong?

Most first-build wobble comes from pressing a wheel on with a thumb instead of a wheel press, which starts it at a slight angle before it is fully seated. Pull it off and re-press it square rather than assuming the part is defective — it is a technique issue on almost every first attempt.

Does truing a tyre count as illegal modification?

Under the general Race Regulations, cutting or modifying tyre material is permitted as long as the finished tyre stays inside the diameter and width limits, so truing to correct runout is legal there. Stock Class forbids cutting or shaving tyres outright, so truing is off the table in that class. Confirm which rule set your event runs before sanding anything.
