Wheels set the effective final drive and the contact patch, so they interact with both gearing and tyre choice.

Diameter is gearing

A larger wheel travels further per revolution, which effectively lowers your gear ratio and raises top speed at the cost of acceleration. Changing wheel size without considering the ratio is a common oversight.

Width and stability

Wider wheels give more grip and stability; narrow wheels reduce rolling resistance and weight. Narrow is faster in a straight line, wider is more forgiving through a technical section.

Fit matters most

A wheel that is not seated square wobbles, and a wobbling wheel scrubs speed on every rotation. Check runout by spinning the axle and watching the rim edge against a fixed reference.

Keep axles straight

A bent axle makes even a perfect wheel wobble. Roll axles on a flat surface to check them, and treat them as consumables after a heavy crash.
