Mini 4WD Wheels Guide

A Mini 4WD wheel sets your effective final drive ratio, carries the tyre's contact patch, and must spin true at 20,000+ RPM without shaking the chassis apart. Swap one without weighing all three and a "better" part can make the car slower. This guide covers the official diameter and width limits, how wheel size interacts with gearing, current official low-profile wheel-and-tyre sets, and the fit checks that matter more than any spec sheet.

The official diameter and width limits

Tamiya's official Mini 4WD Race Regulations set a hard envelope on front and rear tyres, which determines usable wheel size since the tyre mounts on the wheel: diameter 22-35mm and width 8-26mm, and the tyre must stay physically attached during the race. Altering the tyre's surface material is not permitted, though mixing different tyre sizes or materials across the four corners is allowed as long as everything stays securely mounted. Stock Class adds a stricter rule: sizes may be mixed, but tyres may not be cut or shaved down. Both rule sets leave the final call to on-day inspection: the Stock Class rules separately forbid "markedly small" rollers and markedly oversized mass-damper holes, while for tyres the requirement is simply to stay within the measured 22-35mm diameter and 8-26mm width limits and pass inspection. Diameter is gearing, not just top speed

A wheel's circumference is how far the car travels per motor-shaft rotation once gearing is accounted for, so a larger-diameter wheel effectively lowers your final drive ratio: more ground per crank turn, more top speed, less torque to get there and climb out of corners. Tamiya's official low-profile parts show both ends of the legal range: 31mm "large diameter" sets sit near the top of the 22-35mm window for higher terminal speed on long straights, while 26mm "small diameter" sets sit nearer the middle for faster acceleration and a lower centre of gravity. Neither is universally correct — a 31mm wheel on an underpowered motor can be slower off the line than a 26mm wheel on the same setup, because the car never reaches the RPM where the extra circumference pays off. Width, contact patch and stability

Within the 8-26mm width band, a wider tyre puts more rubber on the track, raising grip and cornering stability at the cost of rolling resistance and a little straight-line speed. A narrower tyre spins with less friction and rim mass, helping acceleration and top speed on a straight-heavy course, but gives up forgiveness through a bumpy or technical section. This is a trade-off, not an upgrade path either way — a technical track with tight lane changes generally rewards width more than a long, straight speed track. Reading an official low-profile wheel-and-tyre set

Tamiya sells wheels bundled with a matched tyre, not separately, across most of its current low-profile range, so spoke pattern and tyre diameter are fixed together. Four current examples span the range:

"Low friction" means a harder compound that resists bouncing and sheds less grip-driven speed loss in corners, at the cost of overall traction versus a standard kit tyre — pair that trade-off with your course. Cross-check compatibility against your chassis before buying; fitment, as with the Super X/XX-specific set above, is sometimes chassis-locked.

Matching wheel size to chassis tread and wheelbase

Wheel diameter also has to clear the chassis and body. Different chassis platforms are built around different tread widths (distance between left and right wheel centres) and wheelbases (front-to-rear axle distance), which shift if you change tyres, wheels or rollers from stock. Published references: ME runs an 80mm wheelbase with 60mm front / 66mm rear tread; FM-A an 83mm wheelbase with 60mm tread; Super XX an 84mm wheelbase with 70mm tread; Type 1 an 80mm wheelbase with 64mm tread. A combination that clears one platform's body and bumper geometry will not automatically clear another's, so check the specific chassis's compatible-parts listing rather than assume a set that fit one car fits the next. Fit, runout and straight axles

A wheel not seated square on its axle wobbles, and a wobbling wheel scrubs speed on every rotation regardless of how good the wheel or tyre is — the most common reason a "faster" wheel upgrade makes a car slower in practice. Check runout by spinning the wheel and watching the tyre's outer edge against a fixed reference point; visible wobble means the wheel is not fully seated, the axle is bent, or the bearing has play. Roll axles on a flat, hard surface and watch for any part that lifts or wanders — a bent axle makes even a correctly sized wheel run out of true, and axles are best treated as consumable after a hard crash, not reused on faith.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a 31mm wheel on one axle and a 26mm wheel on another?

The general regulations and the Stock Class FAQ both permit mixing tyre sizes and materials across the car, provided everything stays securely mounted. Whether it is a good idea is separate — mismatched diameters change ride height and geometry corner to corner, so most racers do this deliberately, not by accident.

Does a bigger wheel always mean a faster car?

No. Diameter change is a gearing change: it raises theoretical top speed but lowers the torque getting there, so a wheel too large for the motor and gear ratio in use can be slower in practice, especially on a short or technical layout. Treat diameter, gear ratio and motor together, not as separate upgrades.

Can I cut or shave a tyre to fit under a low body?

Not under Stock Class rules, which prohibit cutting or shaving tyres down; the general regulations separately prohibit altering tyre surface material. If ride height is the real problem, it is usually solved through diameter choice or chassis setting, not by reshaping a tyre — organiser rules and on-day inspection are the final word regardless of what is written here.
