Dog Racer 18086: Plan a Shared First Build
Dog Racer 18086 can make a memorable adult-and-child Mini 4WD project because its shiba-inu driver is already assembled and painted. The vehicle is still a kit to assemble. Tamiya specifies a light-green Super-II chassis, white body and A parts, white V-spoke wheels, large narrow arched tires, motor and 5:1 gearing. Two AA batteries are needed separately. Split the build into supervised, concrete tasks rather than handing over a bag of small parts at once.
Inventory together
Open the box over a tray and identify the pre-finished dog driver, body, chassis, wheels, gears, motor and stickers against the instruction sheet. The dog figure being pre-painted does not mean the car body arrives built or painted. Keep tiny screws and clips in separate containers. An adult should handle cutters and any sharp runner remnants while a younger builder can help sort colors and find steps in the manual.
Divide assembly into checkpoints
Build the Super-II drivetrain and wheels first. Tamiya lists a 150 × 97 × 45 mm finished car and a 5:1 gear ratio for this exact kit. Turn both axles by hand before the body goes on; then check body and dog driver clearance. Add stickers after the chassis works so decorative work does not hide an assembly fault. The adult should verify the rear stay, gear cover and battery orientation.
Make the first run a learning session
Use a suitable Mini 4WD track, not a desk edge. Start in the kit's stock configuration, watch the car complete several laps, then stop and inspect loose wheels or tires. If it derails, note the section and look for a basic fit issue before buying upgrades. Supervision and the event's current rules matter more than selecting a supposedly fastest first part.
