60mm Hollow vs 72mm Reinforced Shafts: Check Fit Before Weight

Buy the shaft length required by your chassis and wheel arrangement first. Tamiya 15440 is a 60mm hollow stainless product; 15417 is a 72mm reinforced product associated with Super X and Super XX fit. They are not interchangeable answers to “which shaft is better?” The extra 12mm is a geometry difference, not an upgrade level. Compare construction only after both candidates satisfy the same fit requirement.

Identify a wheel axle, not a propeller shaft

These products are wheel shafts carrying the wheels across the chassis. A propeller shaft transmits drive along a single-shaft car and is a different component. A similarly named hollow propeller shaft is not a substitute for a hollow wheel axle. Start with the component drawing and part reference in your kit instructions.

Keep the original shaft and wheels together while checking the replacement. Record the chassis, wheel part, original length and whether the wheel holes or shaft arrangement have been modified. A body name can appear on different chassis editions, so use the exact kit number rather than assuming a familiar shell proves the axle specification.

Choose length and engagement before material

The Japanese 15440 description identifies the 60mm product for Mini 4WD chassis excluding Super X and Super XX. The 15417 product is the 72mm reinforced option documented for those wider applications; Tamiya USA also names TR-1. Use the manual for the actual build, particularly where wheels or the chassis have been changed.

A shaft that is too short can leave inadequate wheel engagement. A shaft that is longer than the intended arrangement can project or require a wheel setup that changes clearance and width. Do not create a pierced-wheel conversion merely to use a shaft ordered by mistake. Confirm the planned modification and class rules separately before buying hardware for it.

What hollow and reinforced actually tell you

Tamiya positions 15440's hollow stainless construction as lighter than kit-standard components while maintaining comparable strength. That is a manufacturer claim about the product's intended comparison, not a Monkee Mods impact or acceleration test. It does not prove that every hollow shaft is stronger or faster than every solid shaft.

Tamiya USA describes 15417 as reinforced steel with black nickel plating. Reinforcement does not make it the correct choice for a car requiring a standard 60mm arrangement. If your aim is to compare hollow and reinforced construction, seek candidates of the correct common length and intended application first. Otherwise any observed change is confounded by a different wheel installation.

Replace carefully and check the complete car

Support the assembly properly when fitting wheels so force is not applied through the chassis at an angle. Use appropriate tools and the installation method for the wheel. Check both wheels are seated squarely and rotate without contact. Do not force a bent shaft straight by pressing the wheel harder onto it.

Inspect for runout, wheel-to-chassis rubbing and excessive side play after assembly. If wobble remains, examine the wheel and bearing location as well as the shaft. Measure the finished car across its widest points and check protruding ends and body clearance. A correct part can still be installed at the wrong position. Keep the previous arrangement recorded so you can isolate what changed rather than attributing every improvement to weight.

Product checklist

Use the two exact listings below to avoid ordering by material alone. Compare length, chassis application, pack contents and the wheel installation you intend to retain. If the listing and your manual disagree, resolve that before purchase. Recheck current availability; this guide does not assume both products are in stock.

Frequently asked questions

Is 15417 a 60mm reinforced shaft?

No. Item 15417 is the 72mm reinforced product; the length must match the planned assembly.

Can 15440 replace the standard shaft on Super X or Super XX?

The cited Japanese 15440 description excludes those chassis from its standard fit. Check the appropriate 72mm product and manual.

Does hollow construction guarantee a faster car?

No. Fit, straightness, wheel seating and the rest of the car matter. This guide reports no original lap test.
