Carbon Pinion 15453: Fit, Wear and Replacement

Item 15453 is a pack of six black, carbon-fiber-reinforced 8-tooth pinions. Tamiya describes the material as contributing to a more efficient drivetrain. That is a material claim about a part, not a measured speed gain for your car. Start by confirming that an 8T pinion and the motor shaft in your build match the kit instructions.

Spot a real replacement need

Inspect the pinion with batteries removed. Look for missing or visibly rounded teeth, a cracked bore, or a gear that turns on the shaft without driving its mate. If the car sounds rough, also examine the mating gear and cover; a new pinion cannot compensate for a chipped counter gear or a cover pinching the train. Photograph the old pinion before removal so tooth orientation and its position on the shaft are recorded.

Install one pinion cleanly

Use the proper pinion tool or the fitting method in the kit manual. Support the shaft and press straight rather than levering against the motor housing. Fit the pinion at the required position so its teeth meet the mating gear across the full face. Rotate the drivetrain by hand before adding batteries. Resistance or a repeating click calls for another inspection, not a longer powered test.

Keep the remaining five useful

A six-piece pack is practical for a pit box, but store the pinions by item number and keep dust out of the bore. Do not mix old and new parts blindly when diagnosing a noisy gearbox. Tamiya lists broad chassis compatibility for 15453, including AR, MA and VZ, yet the exact gear pairing still comes from the chassis manual. Compare the same car before and after replacement if you want to measure a performance difference.

Frequently asked questions

Does carbon reinforcement change the gear ratio?

No. Item 15453 is an 8T pinion; the full gear pairing determines the ratio.

Does the pack contain one gear?
