DCR-01 18646: Three-Piece Body and MA Kit Guide
DCR-01, item 18646, is an MA Mini 4WD PRO kit built around a body you can assemble in sections. Its pearl-red shell has separate front and rear cowls plus an optional canopy, which makes the body construction part of the project rather than a single piece you only clip on at the end. Underneath are a white MA chassis, a double-shaft motor and 4:1 stock gears. This guide describes those actual box contents and the customisation possibilities that require additional parts.
What makes DCR-01's body different?
Tamiya credits the DCR-01 design to Takayuki Yamazaki. It calls the body a new three-piece concept: front cowl, rear cowl and an optional canopy. That final component is easy to confuse with DCR-02's third piece, which is a rear wing; they are separate products. DCR-01's pearl-red colour and metallic sticker sheet provide the standard look of item 18646. You can choose whether to fit the canopy, but a different body colour is not already hiding in the box.
Tamiya suggests combining the body with separately sold sets in other colours. That makes DCR-01 attractive if choosing colour sections is part of your hobby. Budget and identify any extra body set separately, then check the relevant instructions before exchanging pieces. Do not assume that “three-piece” means every DCR release shares every component or that a box includes several colour options. Our decal guide covers an alternative way to personalise the supplied shell without presenting extra pieces as stock contents.
The white MA chassis configuration
For 18646, Tamiya specifies a white one-piece MA frame, six individual low-friction rollers and a rear skid bar. The central double-shaft motor is included, and its stock gear ratio is 4:1. Large-diameter six-spoke wheels carry low-profile tyres. The published dimensions are 156 mm long, 97 mm wide and 36 mm high. Those are the product-page figures for this standard assembly, not a measured result after a motor or roller change. The low body height is useful for comparing packaging and appearance, but it does not by itself prove faster racing.
MA's single-piece construction differs from MS's three units. That is worth knowing if you already own option parts and expect a particular mounting pattern. For platform-wide fitting and setup questions, see our MA tuning guide. It is safer to check a prospective part's stated compatibility than to infer it from the car's low racing body.
Building and styling the supplied kit
The DCR-01 is a snap-together assembly kit, and the motor is in the box. Two AA (R6/UM3) batteries are required separately. Sort the front cowl, rear cowl and canopy before attaching stickers; each section has a different role. Build and inspect the MA drivetrain first. The wheels should spin by hand without resistance from a misseated tyre or gear cover. Fit the body components, then check that neither cowl catches on the wheels when the car rolls. Keep the canopy safe if you leave it off.
If you later try colour mixing, change the body pieces without silently changing motor, gearing and tyres at the same time. You will be able to tell whether a clearance issue came from the new cowl or another setup alteration. For a track session, use the complete body configuration accepted by the organiser and measure the finished car after any changes. The official product page states how the kit is built; it does not guarantee eligibility for every class or course.
Who should choose DCR-01?
Choose item 18646 if you enjoy the pearl-red DCR look, its removable canopy and the option of later colour-section experiments on an MA platform. The supplied 4:1 gears and white chassis are concrete reasons to distinguish it from DCR-02, whose stock configuration differs. If your interest is simply a complete MA kit, you need no additional body set to assemble DCR-01. If you specifically want to compare the two DCR models, inspect each product page rather than assuming their three-piece designs are identical.
