DCR-02 18650: Modular Body and MA Kit Guide

DCR-02, item 18650, is the second DCR design in Tamiya's Mini 4WD PRO line. Its yellow body is modular like DCR-01, but the third section is a rear wing rather than an optional canopy. Tamiya also explicitly permits exchanging the front and rear cowls with DCR-01 components. Under the body, this box has a gunmetal MA chassis with yellow A parts and 3.5:1 gears. That collection of details makes 18650 a distinct purchase, not simply a recoloured DCR-01.

The DCR-02 body, piece by piece

Takayuki Yamazaki designed the yellow ABS body. Its three components are the front cowl, rear cowl and rear wing, with metallic stickers supplied for decoration. Tamiya says DCR-02 parts can be mixed with other DCR-02 bodies and that the front and rear cowls can be used with DCR-01 components. That is a specific statement about cowls, not a blanket claim that every wing, canopy or mounting part will interchange. It also does not mean the 18650 box includes a second DCR body.

If you enjoy designing a colour layout, first build the supplied yellow combination and keep track of its individual pieces. Additional colours require separate body sets or kits. Check how a proposed cowl fits with the chosen rear section before applying stickers or paint. The freedom to exchange sections is part of the design appeal; it is not evidence of a faster car. Our decal guide can help with a finish that keeps the stock pieces intact.

Gunmetal and yellow MA hardware

The chassis is MA, Tamiya's one-piece midship frame, moulded gunmetal on this kit with yellow A parts. It comes with a double-shaft motor, six low-friction rollers, a rear skid bar and 3.5:1 stock gears. Y-spoke wheels wear low-profile tyres. Tamiya publishes the assembled dimensions as 156 mm long, 97 mm wide and 42 mm high. The difference from DCR-01 goes beyond colour: 18646 has a white chassis, 4:1 gears and a different third body component. Compare the item numbers whenever a store image or shorthand title leaves those details unclear.

A gear ratio does not predict a lap time in isolation. Tyre contact, battery state, motor, assembly and the track all matter. Do not swap gears because “3.5:1 is faster” without testing the car and confirming compatibility. Our motor and gear matching guide explains that broader decision; the confirmed stock configuration here remains Tamiya's own 3.5:1 figure for 18650.

Assembly before mixing body sections

Item 18650 is a snap-together kit with its motor included; two R6/AA/UM3 batteries are separate. Start with the gunmetal frame and supplied gears, then mount the wheels and verify free rotation by hand. Attach the front cowl, rear cowl and rear wing in the order shown in the instructions. A properly seated body should not touch a tyre during a hand roll. Applying the metallic stickers once the fit is known reduces the risk of handling a finished decoration while correcting a misplaced part.

Keep the original yellow sections together when experimenting with DCR-01 cowls later. That gives you a reliable route back to the standard 18650 configuration. If you plan to race a mixed body, inspect its fit and check the organiser's current class rules; Tamiya's product page establishes part compatibility but does not itself decide local event eligibility. Likewise, the published 42 mm height belongs to the described model, so measure a changed body arrangement if height matters for inspection.

Which DCR buyer is it for?

DCR-02 suits someone who likes its yellow, winged shape and wants a 3.5:1 MA stock kit with an explicit path to exchanging front and rear cowls. If you prefer a pearl-red shell with a removable canopy, look at DCR-01 18646 instead. Both are complete builds without buying extra body sets. The design difference is visible immediately; the drivetrain and gear distinction becomes clear from the item pages. Choose by those documented features, then evaluate running behaviour on your own course.

Frequently asked questions

Can DCR-02's cowls combine with DCR-01 pieces?

Yes. Tamiya specifically says its front and rear cowls can be used with DCR-01 components. It does not make the same blanket claim for every body piece.

Are the optional colour pieces in the kit?

No. Item 18650 supplies its own yellow three-piece body; other bodies or colour sets are separate.
