FM-A is Tamiya's current front-motor Mini 4WD chassis, sold today as a handful of named kits rather than one generic box — Rowdy Bull, Razorback, Mach Frame and a Starter Pack variant, each with a different body, wheel set and as-shipped gearing. What sets FM-A apart from Tamiya's other current chassis

Tamiya's Chassis & Compatible Parts Catalogue lists FM-A at 150mm long, 97mm wide, with an 83mm wheelbase, 60mm tread, 71g weight and 2.5mm ground clearance. Tamiya does not say what that 71g covers, and it cannot be a finished car — the race minimum is 90g with motor and batteries — so it is not comparable with the complete-machine weights the same catalogue gives for VZ, AR, MS, MA and ME. The motor sits ahead of the wheelbase centre rather than mid-ship, which Tamiya describes as giving the car "a center of gravity toward the front" that helps it hold a flatter attitude on undulating, elevation-heavy layouts — the trade-off side of that layout is covered in the tuning guide linked above, not here. Razorback and Mach Frame ship with different gear ratios out of the box — 4.2:1 versus 3.5:1 — which is a real difference in how the car pulls versus tops out before you change a single part. Standalone kit versus Starter Pack — what actually differs

The 18710 Starter Pack builds the same FM-A chassis under the Rowdy Bull body, but the box contains more than a standalone kit. Tamiya's own listing for it includes an Atomic-Tuned 2 motor in place of the stock FA-130, the 3.5:1 gear set already fitted, super-hard tyres, short mass-damper blocks, a brake set, stabilizer balls, wide FRP plates for front and rear, and both a screwdriver and a wrench — plus two brake sponge hardnesses (grey for strong braking, black for mild) so a buyer can compare both without a separate purchase. A standalone kit like Razorback or Mach Frame gives you the bare chassis, stock motor and stock gearing, and you choose every option part yourself. Neither is objectively better: the Starter Pack removes several early purchasing decisions and gives a car built closer to a tuned baseline out of the box, while a standalone kit is the cheaper way in if you already know which motor, tyres and stays you want to fit next.

Motor family and race-class fit before you buy

FM-A is a standard single-shaft chassis, not one of the three chassis — ME, MA and MS — that current regulations restrict to the kit-included motor or the dual-shaft Mini 4WD PRO motor family. For Stock Class specifically, current official FAQ language confirms Dash-series motors are permitted, and the class does not single out any chassis type by name — it instead bans cutting or shaving the chassis and homemade chassis outright, and restricts additional parts to genuine Tamiya Mini 4WD, R/C Mini 4WD and Dangun Racer parts. If body styling is the deciding factor, FM-A's current lineup is narrower than MA or VZ — four named kits plus a colour variant, against a wider range of dual-shaft and rear-motor bodies — so check whether the body you want is only offered on a different chassis before committing to FM-A for looks alone. Is FM-A a good first Mini 4WD chassis?

Yes, though not uniquely so. Its single-shaft drivetrain and full standard motor ladder are the same familiar system used across most rear-motor kits, so nothing about FM-A is mechanically harder for a beginner — the main consideration is body choice, since the current lineup is smaller than MA's or VZ's.

Should a beginner buy the standalone kit or the Starter Pack?
