Super Avante RS 18065: A Guide to the Super-II Kit

Super Avante RS, item 18065, is a complete Racing Mini 4WD kit built around Tamiya's Super-II chassis. Its appeal starts with the wedge-shaped Avante body, fluorescent orange tyres and blue chassis, but the box also gives you a specific stock drivetrain: a Type 130 motor and 4.2:1 gearing. If you want to learn a conventional single-shaft build while keeping an Avante on the shelf, this is the exact kit to inspect. This guide follows the published contents of 18065 rather than treating every Avante release as interchangeable.

Which Super Avante is in this box?

The number on the box matters. Item 18065 is Super Avante RS (Super-II Chassis), Racing Mini 4WD Series No. 65. Tamiya describes a broad, low, race-car-style nose, a large rear wing and slits near the motor area. It provides bold graphic stickers for the body. The large-diameter slick tyres are fluorescent orange, fitted to silver metal-plated wheels. Those are visible reasons to pick this model over a Super-II kit with a very different body. They do not prove that it will post a quicker lap than another correctly built car.

The intake openings are part of Tamiya's design description. Their presence is not a substitute for checking motor temperature or keeping the drivetrain free of binding. Tamiya also mentions a Motor Cooling Shield as a separately available option that can be fitted after removing the motor cover. That shield is not a hidden part in the 18065 box. If your interest is mostly the look of the machine, you can assemble and run the supplied kit first without making an immediate option-parts purchase.

What the stock Super-II setup gives you

Super-II places a Type 130 single-shaft motor toward the rear and sends power forward through the chassis drivetrain. This is distinct from the central double-shaft motors in MS and MA Mini 4WD PRO kits. Check the shaft format before buying a replacement motor. Tamiya specifies a 4.2:1 gear ratio for this exact release, so do not copy a ratio from another Avante or from a general Super-II chart and call it the box configuration.

Tamiya lists a blue ABS chassis, rotating switch, a rear stay secured at two points and an easy-lock gear cover. It points out multiple attachment holes on the front bumper and rear stay. These provide places to fit compatible option parts later; they are not a promise that any roller or stay will clear this body. The published assembled footprint is 150 mm long by 97 mm wide. You can use those figures to identify the product, then measure your own finished setup if you add hardware. Our Super-II tuning guide covers later alignment and setup questions without confusing optional equipment with what 18065 contains.

A sensible first build for 18065

The kit uses snap-together assembly and includes its Type 130 motor. It requires two R6/AA/UM3 batteries bought separately. Lay out the blue chassis, motor, gears, wheel set, body and stickers before starting, then follow the instruction sequence rather than pressing the body on while the drivetrain is still incomplete. Confirm that the gear cover locks properly and that each wheel turns freely by hand. If a wheel catches or the switch feels reluctant, revisit the step that seated the axle, gear or cover before trying the car on a track.

Build it in its standard configuration for the first run. That creates a useful reference for any later motor, gear or roller change. A trackside checklist is more useful than an unsupported speed promise: fit fresh permitted batteries, check the tyres are fully seated, verify the body and rear stay do not touch the wheels, and run the car inside a suitable Mini 4WD course. Who should choose it?

Choose Super Avante RS 18065 if you want this particular Avante silhouette and a straightforward Super-II single-shaft kit whose stock ratio is documented. It is also a useful starting point if you plan to learn how a standard rear-motor car is assembled before experimenting with compatible parts. If a midship double-shaft drivetrain is your priority, compare it with an MS or MA kit instead of buying on the Avante name alone. The body design, tyre size and chassis are the concrete differences to assess; real race performance depends on assembly, course and subsequent setup.

Frequently asked questions

Are batteries and the Motor Cooling Shield included?

No. Tamiya specifies two AA batteries as separately required, and calls the shield a separately available option. The kit does include its Type 130 motor.

Does this kit take a Mini 4WD PRO double-shaft motor?

No. Super-II uses a single-shaft motor. Select replacement motors by chassis compatibility rather than by a similar-looking model name.
