Dart Mass and Muzzle Energy: What the Calculation Means
Two foam darts can leave a blaster at the same measured speed yet carry different kinetic energy if their masses differ. The physics calculation is simple, but it is not a safety verdict or a substitute for a field chronograph rule. Use a reliable scale and consistent units, then report what was measured rather than attaching a universal 'safe' label to one result.
Measure inputs explicitly
Weigh several intact darts from the same batch and state whether you report an individual mass or a batch mean. Convert grams to kilograms. Measure speed in metres per second using a correctly set chronograph; if it reports feet per second, convert units before calculating. Document sensor errors rather than treating them as actual dart speeds.
Calculate with the right units
Kinetic energy in joules is one half times mass in kilograms times speed in metres per second squared: E = 0.5 × m × v². For example, a measured 1.0 g dart at 30 m/s gives 0.5 × 0.001 × 30² = 0.45 J. That is an arithmetic example, not a claim about a product or an acceptable play limit. Speed uncertainty grows in importance because speed is squared.
Do not turn energy into a blanket permission
Impact depends on tip design, contact area, distance, protective equipment and the person struck. Tournament and venue rules may set speed, energy or ammunition restrictions using their own methods. Follow the current rules, eye-protection requirements and manufacturer instructions; never aim at the face. Recheck after changing darts or a blaster component.
