DCR-01 vs DCR-02: MA Body and Gear Differences

Tamiya's DCR-01 18646 and DCR-02 18650 were both designed by Takayuki Yamazaki around modular bodywork on the MA chassis. That is the family resemblance, but the two numbered kits have different body modules, wheel designs and stock gear ratios. If you are buying for mix-and-match shell work, the parts arrangement deserves as much attention as the colour. If you are buying to run either car untouched, the ratio and tyre/wheel package should be recorded before you make performance comparisons.

The common MA platform

Both boxes contain a one-piece MA chassis and an included double-shaft motor. Tamiya publishes 156 × 97 mm for both, with six chassis rollers and a low-friction rear skid feature in its MA descriptions. Two AA batteries are separately required. MA's central motor does not use the long propeller shaft of a rear-motor VZ or front-motor FM-A model. This means the two DCR kits share the PRO motor family, though it does not mean every decorated body panel or option part will fit without a clearance check. The broader MA kit guide is useful for comparing these with unrelated MA cars; the differences below are specific to the DCR pair.

DCR-01's canopy-centred design

DCR-01's pearl-red shell is described by Tamiya as a three-piece design: a separate front cowl, rear cowl and optional canopy. The white MA chassis contrasts with that red body, while large-diameter six-spoke wheels carry low-profile tyres. Tamiya gives the complete kit a 4:1 gear ratio and 36 mm published height. The separate canopy invites colour combinations when optional body parts are available; it also changes how a builder approaches the shell compared with a single moulding. Keep the original parts together so you can return to a known, correctly fitted arrangement if a decorative swap interferes with the wheels or body catch.

DCR-02's wing and cross-model cowls

DCR-02's yellow ABS body uses a front cowl, rear cowl and rear wing instead of DCR-01's optional canopy arrangement. Its MA chassis is gunmetal with yellow A parts, with Y-spoke wheels and low-profile tyres. The kit-specific ratio is 3.5:1 and Tamiya lists its completed height at 42 mm. Crucially, Tamiya says DCR-02's front and rear cowls can be used with DCR-01 components. That is a specific manufacturer-supported mix-and-match claim for those parts, not a blanket promise that every wing, canopy, plate and roller combination will clear when assembled. Try any combination on the bench, spin the wheels, and check body retention before putting it on a track.

How to choose without overreading the gear numbers

Choose DCR-01 if the low pearl-red body, canopy and large-diameter six-spoke wheels appeal to you. Choose DCR-02 if the three-piece winged silhouette, yellow-on-gunmetal colour scheme and cross-model cowl experiments are the attraction. A 3.5:1 gear ratio turns the axle more times per motor revolution than 4:1; it does not establish that DCR-02 will beat DCR-01 in a race. Tyre diameter, traction, build friction, motor condition and circuit layout all intervene. See the motor/gear matching guide before changing either stock ratio. If you want a fair first comparison, build both as instructed with equivalent batteries and test on the same course before replacing anything.

For a mixed DCR display build, keep the original cowl and sticker pieces labelled by item number. A later colour or body swap is easier to diagnose when you can reconstruct the factory arrangement. For a track build, take a photograph of the assembled shell from the side and above, then check the tyres and rear wing or canopy after the first laps for contact marks. The official cross-compatibility statement is a useful starting point, but physical clearance is determined by the exact combination you mount.

Frequently asked questions

Do DCR-01 and DCR-02 have identical box gearing?

No. Tamiya lists 4:1 for DCR-01 and 3.5:1 for DCR-02.

Can their body parts be mixed?

Tamiya explicitly says DCR-02 front and rear cowls can work with DCR-01 components. Check the fit of the exact shell and setup you build; do not assume unlimited interchangeability.

Do either boxes include batteries?

No. Both official product pages list two R6/AA/UM3 cells as separately required.
