The counter gear sits between the pinion on the motor shaft and the crown gear on the drive shafts, so friction there is multiplied through the whole gear train rather than affecting a single wheel -- why racers treat it as one of the higher-value places to fit precision bearings, ahead of a wheel bearing. Stainless steel shafts also resist the corrosion a plain steel shaft can pick up from repeated oiling and course dust, keeping the fit inside the gear bore consistent over many rebuilds.
