Mini 4WD Batteries Guide
Every Mini 4WD car is graded on the same scale: at least 90g including the motor and the batteries. That line in the official regulations is why the battery is not a background part you grab from a drawer — it is weighed, inspected and, on the standard and PRO chassis, wired in pairs that set the voltage the motor actually sees. What the official regulations actually say about batteries
Tamiya's official Mini 4WD Race Regulations state it plainly: only Tamiya-branded R6/AA/UM3 batteries are permitted, and R/C Mini 4WD and TR-1 chassis cars are restricted to alkaline cells specifically. R6/AA/UM3 are three names for one physical size, the standard AA cylindrical cell, so this is a brand restriction on top of the familiar size, not a new size to shop for. The regulations also cover battery condition directly: if a battery or its label appears damaged in any way, it will not be accepted at inspection for safety reasons. Neither the general regulations nor the Stock Class rules published alongside them add a chemistry requirement beyond that brand restriction, or extra battery-specific limits beyond installation and terminal rules covered below. One AA cell or two: chassis-driven battery counts
How many batteries a car takes is decided by the chassis, not preference. The standard rear-motor and front-motor chassis, and the dual-shaft Mini 4WD PRO chassis (MS, MA, ME and similar), run two AA cells in series, which is why Tamiya publishes every motor's performance figures at 2.4-3.0V — the working range of two alkaline AA cells under load. The off-road FUN-VROOM EZ Chassis runs differently: Tamiya's own product page states it runs on a single R6/AA/UM3 battery driving a motor geared 50:1, trading top speed for the torque needed to climb slopes. That cell sits behind a cover on the underside, removable without tools, in keeping with the EZ Chassis's screw-free, cement-free snap assembly.

Tamiya's own battery: POWERCHAMP RX
Tamiya sells its own AA battery for Mini 4WD, POWERCHAMP RX (item 55119, a 2-pack; item 55120 a 12-pack of the same cell), an alkaline R6/AA/UM3 battery with zero mercury content. Tamiya markets it as an improvement over the earlier Powerchamp RS, citing stronger output through the early sprint off the start, better climbing on slopes, and durability over repeated runs. Since the regulations above restrict official events to Tamiya-branded R6/AA/UM3 cells, POWERCHAMP RX is the product that restriction points to — check the current listing before assuming a generic AA battery, rechargeable or otherwise, satisfies an event's rule.
Terminals, installation and technical inspection
Two rules govern how the battery physically connects to the car, both enforced at inspection rather than left to preference. First, batteries must be installed in the correct polarity and direction — the Stock Class Regulations state this as its own numbered rule rather than assuming it. Second, terminal parts must be either the kit-included battery terminals or an official Grade-Up Part version, fitted exactly as the instruction manual shows; soldering a connection or fitting double-plated terminals is explicitly not allowed. One detail racers sometimes miss: the Stock Class FAQ confirms a car may run without its battery holder attached, so long as the battery installation itself still meets the rules — useful if a holder cracks mid-event, but not a reason to skip checking fit before race day.
Weight, dimensions and the 90g minimum
The battery is not weighed separately from the rest of the car — it is part of the combined figure that has to clear the floor. The official minimum car weight, including batteries and motor together, is at least 90g, alongside the car's other envelope limits: under 105mm wide, under 70mm tall, under 165mm long, and at least 1mm of ground clearance. A pair of AA cells makes up a meaningful share of that 90g on a light build, so a car trimmed aggressively elsewhere sometimes only clears the minimum because the battery pair is still installed — pull the batteries on a stripped-down chassis and it may fail the floor on its own.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use rechargeable NiMH AA batteries instead of alkaline?
The official Race Regulations restrict permitted cells to Tamiya-branded R6/AA/UM3 batteries, and Tamiya's own current AA product for Mini 4WD, POWERCHAMP RX, is alkaline. Treat a third-party rechargeable AA as unverified for an official Tamiya event until you confirm otherwise with the current regulations and the organiser running that race — a local class may add its own allowance a general guide cannot predict.
Do I need to remove the battery holder before racing?
No — the Stock Class FAQ specifically allows racing without the battery holder attached, provided the batteries themselves are still installed correctly. Check this against the current rules for your event rather than assuming it carries over to every class.
Will a damaged-looking battery be rejected at inspection?
Yes. The regulations state a battery or its label showing any sign of damage will not be accepted for safety reasons, regardless of whether it still powers the car normally on the bench. Inspect the cell and its wrapper before you leave for an event, not after you reach the table.
