A Mini 4WD brake is not a lever or a pad squeezing a disc — it is a strip of sponge, bolted to a stay below the chassis, that does nothing until the car reaches a raised track section and the sponge rubs the course surface. That mechanism separates a car that survives a jump from one that flies off the lane. How a brake stay and sponge actually work
Official Mini 4WD courses build banked corners and jump sections into the layout, and a brake's whole job is to shed speed at exactly those points with no driver touching a control — there is no radio, no trigger, nothing but the car's own moving contact with the track. A brake stay is a flat FRP or carbon plate, mounted at the front and/or rear of the chassis, carrying a strip of sponge on its underside. On flat, straight track the sponge sits clear of the surface and does nothing; the course only lifts to meet it on a slope, bank or jump ramp, where the added rolling friction slows the car before it leaves the track. Because the sponge only touches raised sections, a brake that's too aggressive costs lap time on every one of them, not just the risky ones — so start softer and add braking only where testing shows the car actually needs it.
Sponge choice: thickness, density and how they interact
Tamiya sells brake sponge two ways: bundled with a stay, or as a separate replacement/upgrade item, because sponge wears out long before the stay does. The FRP Rear Brake Stay Set (item 15518) ships with a 2mm-thick red sponge on a wide-surface FRP plate shaped to stay clear of the rollers, compatible with MA, MS, FM-A, AR, VS, Super-II, Super X, Super XX and Super TZ-X chassis. The HG Carbon Brake Stay (item 15550) is a 1.5mm carbon-fibre plate for the same job across a wider list — FM-A, Super-II, Super X, Super XX, Super TZ-X, VS, MS, AR, MA, VZ and ME — but ships without sponge, since Tamiya sells sponge separately in multiple thicknesses and densities so builders can match it to the course.

Stay material matters less for braking feel than the sponge does — FRP flexes slightly under load, carbon holds its shape more precisely, but either plate delivers whatever sponge is bolted to it. Softer, lower-density sponge bites gently and progressively, useful on technical courses with several brake zones close together; firmer sponge cuts speed hard over a shorter distance, useful for one steep jump lead-in. Stay height is the adjustment that changes the most
How far the sponge sits below the stay decides when it first touches the track and how much of its face makes contact, set with spacers or washers under the mounting screws rather than by swapping the whole part. A single millimetre of change in that gap alters when braking starts and how hard it bites far more than switching sponge grade at the same height would — so the practical order is height first, grade second. A brake stay bolts through the chassis's existing mounting holes, and Stock Class rules only permit countersinking or drilling those holes to 2mm, not adding new ones, so plan spacers around holes the chassis already provides.
What the rules allow you to change
Cutting brake sponge to shape is explicitly permitted under Tamiya's Stock Class FAQ, so trimming a sponge's length or profile to fit a stay or clear a roller is normal, legal tuning. Heating or altering the sponge's material is explicitly forbidden — the FAQ calls it dangerous and strictly banned. The chassis rules split by class: the general Race Regulations allow cutting away plastic material as long as the original shape stays identifiable, whereas Stock Class permits no chassis cutting at all — only countersinking existing holes, or drilling and widening them up to 2mm. Either way, brake stays fall under the same "no reshaping, no homemade parts" restriction as the rest of the car. Official courses run a 115mm lane width and 50mm wall height, so a brake tuned on one layout should behave predictably on another built to spec. Wear is the part builders forget to check
Sponge compresses under repeated impact and abrades against the track, so a setup that braked correctly last session can be running noticeably less brake now with nothing intentionally changed. Treat brake sponge as a consumable, like tyres. Before a race, check the sponge face for glazing, flattening or a torn edge, and re-measure stay height — a worn sponge at the same nominal height as a fresh one is effectively a softer brake. If a car behaves differently between meetings with nothing else changed, worn brake sponge is one of the first things worth ruling out, alongside worn rollers and play at the chassis mounting points.

Do I need brakes at both the front and rear?
