Mini 4WD Community FAQ
Tamiya's Mini 4WD line dates back to July 1982, and by December 1995 the series had already sold past 100 million units — long enough for a stable set of community habits and race conventions to form around it. Most new racers arrive with the same handful of questions: which chassis to buy, what a track official actually checks before letting a car run, and whether Stock Class or B-MAX (Basic-MAX) is the right way in. This FAQ answers those questions with the numbers that back them up, sourced from Tamiya's own regulation pages and chassis catalogue.
What the official regulations actually require
Every Tamiya-sanctioned event checks a car against the same core dimensional and weight limits published in the official Mini 4WD Race Regulations. These apply regardless of chassis or class, and inspectors measure them before a car is allowed on the track.

The regulations also name several outright bans: homemade chassis and bodies, front- or rear-wheel-drive conversions of a car that should stay 4WD, soldered or double-plated battery terminals, and any motor with a detached cap — Tamiya treats a loosened motor cap as evidence of illegal internal modification. The permitted motor list runs from the kit-standard motor through the Tuned and Dash families up to Hyper-Dash 3, plus their PRO double-shaft equivalents; PRO cars are restricted to kit or PRO-specific motors and cannot take a standard single-shaft motor. These are Tamiya's own tournament rules — a local shop event can run tighter restrictions, so the organiser's printed rules and on-day technical inspection always take precedence over any article, including this one. Stock Class, B-MAX and open class — what's actually different
Tamiya's own Stock Class Regulations (rules in force as amended 11 May 2026) go further than the general regulations above. Chassis cutting, shaving or drilling new screw holes is banned outright — existing holes may only be countersunk. Roller combinations are restricted to a permitted list, tyres cannot be cut or shaved, and a "forbidden zone" running between the front and rear axles (and from the rear half of the front wheels to the front half of the rear wheels) may only carry the body and driver figure — no stays, dampers or other option parts may sit inside it. Additional parts are limited to genuine Tamiya Mini 4WD, R/C Mini 4WD and Dangun Racer parts.
B-MAX is a separate, community-run class rather than an official Tamiya category, with its own independently maintained rule set — it's commonly used as an entry point because it keeps modification within similar bounds to Stock Class while giving shops and clubs their own scoring conventions. Because B-MAX is organiser-defined, its legality can't be inferred from the Stock Class page above; check the event's own published rule sheet. Which chassis do people actually start with
Tamiya currently sells cars across midship (double-shaft), front-motor and rear-motor layouts, and the official chassis catalogue publishes exact dimensions for each. The four most common starting points in current kits:

MA and VZ both ship across a wide range of current kits, are well documented, and take the largest pool of aftermarket stays, rollers and gear sets — which is why they're the two most commonly recommended first chassis. MS splits into three separate nose, centre and tail sections, more tunable but also more fiddly for a first build. Pick one and learn it properly before switching; the compatible-parts list differs enough between families (front-motor FM-A parts largely don't fit a rear-motor VZ) that hopping chassis early just means re-buying stays and rollers. Do I need a home track, and what if I want off-road instead
No — the great majority of Mini 4WD racers run almost exclusively on shop or club tracks, because a full official-length circuit with banked corners and lane changes needs more space than most homes have. A small home section is still useful for isolating one variable (checking a roller height change, listening for gear noise) between sessions, but it is not how people learn to read a competition layout; that only happens by running the actual course repeatedly. If tarmac-style racing isn't the draw, Tamiya's FUN-VROOM EZ Chassis (item 19024) is a separate off-road-oriented product: it runs on a single AA battery, assembles by snap-fit with no cement or screws, uses a 50:1 geared double-shaft motor for climbing torque over top speed, and pairs large-diameter off-road tyres with a 130 × 72 × 71mm body built to handle slopes rather than a banked oval. Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to get to a first race?
A starter kit, a set of rechargeable AA cells (or Tamiya-branded alkaline cells, since only Tamiya-branded R6/AA/UM3 batteries are tournament-legal) and a pack of ball bearings will get most people to their first shop-track session inside Stock Class or B-MAX limits. Add option parts only once you can name the specific problem — a roller that's too high, a chassis that flexes under load — that each one is meant to fix; buying a full stay-and-damper stack before a single test run rarely helps.
Is B-MAX worth building for if I plan to race open class eventually?
Generally yes. Because B-MAX and Stock Class both restrict chassis cutting and limit which parts you can add, they force attention onto build quality — square rollers, flat-mounted stays, clean gear meshing — that carries over directly once you're allowed the full open-class parts catalogue. Racers who skip straight to unrestricted modification often have to unlearn sloppy assembly habits later.
Can I run PRO motors or parts in a standard chassis, or the reverse?
No. Mini 4WD PRO cars use double-shaft motors that drive all four wheels directly and are restricted under the official regulations to kit motors or PRO-specific designs; standard single- and double-shaft chassis outside the PRO line use a different motor family entirely.
