A Mini 4WD track editor is software that lets you place straights, curves, lane changes and slopes on a grid before you buy or bolt together a single rail section. Two real tools do this job, solving different problems: a free browser-based layout editor built by hobbyist Michele Ferri ("Pimentoso"), and Lane5, a physics-based simulator that predicts how a car will actually behave on the layout you draw. Neither replaces running real cars on a real table, but both save time and plastic before you commit to a build.

What a track editor actually does

The free Mini4WD Online Track Editor is a snap-together digital version of the physical hobby: drag pieces onto a grid — straights in quarter, half, three-quarter and full lengths, 45° and 90° corners, digital curves, R2100 curves, lane changers, "burning changers," waves, slopes, banks and jumps — and they snap into alignment automatically. Pieces come in 3-lane and 5-lane variants, the two official Tamiya circuit widths, and the workspace scale is fixed at 1 pixel to 1cm with 1 square to 1 metre, giving a realistic footprint for the room or table you have. The Pimentoso editor answers "does this layout fit and connect correctly." Lane5 answers a harder question: "how will a specific car run this layout." Its drag-and-drop builder covers 39 section types across 3-lane and 5-lane configurations, including loading official Japan Cup layouts, and its physics engine estimates section-by-section speed, jump bounce height, brake clearance and course-out risk from centripetal force against roller grip. It also models multi-lap battery drain and motor heat, runs up to five cars at once for comparison, and can run 100+ Monte Carlo passes to flag a setup that fails only occasionally rather than every lap. Tamiya's own product note on the curve set sums up how these parts are bought: pieces "can of course be used to replace damaged sections or add to your existing layout" — course sections are consumable and modular by design, so an editor layout is assembled a set at a time, not as one custom order.

Dimensions an editor can't override

Whatever you draw, a real course still has to satisfy Tamiya's published race geometry. The official Mini 4WD Race Regulations (R1) specify an individual lane width of 115mm measured on a straight section, and a course wall height of 50mm measured from the track surface — figures for official competition courses, not necessarily every home layout. The same regulations note that lane width and wall height may vary at lane-change and bank-turn sections for operational reasons, which is exactly why an editor that snaps pieces to a fixed grid beats eyeballing a layout by hand: it keeps those transitions aligned even though their dimensions are not uniform with the straights. None of this replaces the organiser's own rules and on-day technical inspection — check current requirements against R1 and the Stock Class regulations (R2) before building toward a specific competition.

A practical planning workflow

  • Measure your actual floor or table space first, then build to that footprint — the 1 square/1 metre grid makes this direct.
  • Count pieces by type once the layout is finished so you know exactly which official sets to buy.
  • Check every lane-change, bank and slope transition for a clean snap; a gap or overlap on screen is a gap or overlap on the table.
  • Tuning a specific car, not just planning space? Move the layout into Lane5 and check jump bounce height and brake clearance before touching the real chassis.
  • Export or screenshot the finished plan and bring it to the build session, so "we're one curve short" doesn't happen halfway through assembly.
  • Treat the digital run as a shape, not a result: cornering, jump and brake behaviour only shows up on the physical course, so budget test-and-adjust time after the build, not instead of it.

No — it is a free community project built by Michele Ferri (Pimentoso), and it is the tool Tamiya USA's own tech-tips page points builders to by name. It is not sold or maintained by Tamiya itself.

Will a layout that works in the editor definitely race well?

Not automatically. A basic layout editor only confirms the pieces connect and fit your space; it does not model speed, bounce or braking. A physics simulator such as Lane5 gets closer, and even then it is an estimate — final behaviour depends on your actual chassis, motor, tyres and the real track's surface condition.

Can I use a digital layout to prepare for a Japan Cup or club event?

You can rehearse section order and car setup against a layout modelled on the real one, since Lane5 supports loading official Japan Cup layouts. But the organiser's current rules and on-day technical inspection always take precedence — confirm the actual competition course and class rules against R1 and R2 before an event, not against a digital plan.
