Takara Tomy vs Hasbro Beyblade: Differences, Fitment and Markets

Every Beyblade you can buy is either a Takara Tomy release or a Hasbro release. Takara created Beyblade and Takara Tomy still designs it. Hasbro has sold it under licence outside Japan and most of Asia since 2002. The two lines share designs, but they differ in names, product codes, release dates, packaging and the regions they are sold in. In some generations they also differ in how the parts physically lock together. This guide sets out what is the same, what is not, and what that means if you buy, mix or compete with Beyblades in Malaysia.

For a quick table that matches Hasbro names to Japanese names, see our Hasbro vs Takara Tomy naming map. This article covers the wider picture: the companies, the markets and fitment.

Who makes what

Beyblade began in Japan in 1999 as a Takara toy line with a tie-in manga. Takara merged with Tomy in 2006, and Takara Tomy has developed every generation since. Hasbro took the line outside Japan in 2002. When Metal Fusion reached the West, Anime News Network reported that Takara Tomy was producing the toys and Hasbro would sell them worldwide except in the Middle East and Asia. The split has held into Beyblade X.

The licence was renewed for Beyblade X in October 2023. Takara Tomy launched Beyblade X in Japan on 15 July 2023. Hasbro announced its Western launch on Beyblade Day, 21 March 2024, and its first products reached US shelves in mid-2024. In a July 2025 interview, TOMY's head of global Beyblade described Hasbro as the Beyblade distributor in the West. Hasbro's 2025 annual report credits Beyblade with solid performance. As of October 2026, we found no announcement that the arrangement is changing.

South KoreaTakara Tomy, via a local distributorDistribution reportedly moved from Youngtoys to Takara Tomy's Korean arm in 2026.
USA, CanadaHasbroSold through mass retailers such as Walmart, Target and Amazon.

In Malaysia the official chain runs from Takara Tomy to its local distributor, Litt Tak Sdn Bhd, as named in the NST's report on the 2024 Beyblade X SEA Cup. We found no official Hasbro Beyblade X distribution here. Hasbro boxes do turn up in Malaysia, but as grey imports carried in by individual sellers. They are genuine products that came through a different channel.

Beyblade X: the same tops, different boxes

Hasbro's launch announcement promised Beyblade X "Tops identical in weight, feel, and performance across Hasbro and Takara Tomy". Hasbro's three-top X-treme Battlers Pack is even sold as "Takara Tomy-designed". The differences you will notice first are on the packaging:

  • Names. Hasbro usually reverses the two words, so Dran Sword becomes Sword Dran. Some names are replaced outright: Hells becomes Incendio, Wizard Rod becomes Wand Wizard, Shark Edge becomes Keel Shark, Knight Shield becomes Helm Knight, Dran Brave becomes Courage Dran and Valkyrie becomes Valkerion. The Ratchet and Bit string, such as 3-60F, stays the same.
  • Codes. Takara Tomy uses BX-, UX- and CX- numbers. Hasbro uses its own item codes, such as F9580 for Sword Dran 3-60F, and they do not map number for number.
  • Dates. Japan usually comes first. The first starters were July 2023 in Japan and mid-2024 in the US.
  • What comes in the box. Hasbro sometimes repackages a Japanese booster as a starter with a launcher, or sells a random-booster prize as an ordinary single. It also sells dual packs and stock combos Japan never offered.
  • Hasbro-first Blades. A few Blades appeared in Hasbro packs before, or instead of, a Japanese release: Yell Kong, Tusk Mammoth and Talon Ptera (later Ptera Swing in Japan's UX-10 Customize Set).

Our four side-by-side guides show what this looks like on real products: Sword Dran vs Dran Sword, Wand Wizard vs Wizard Rod, Soar Phoenix vs Phoenix Wing and Keel Shark vs Shark Edge.

Beyblade X fitment: what interchanges

Hasbro and Takara Tomy Blades, Ratchets and Bits are designed to interchange, and the fan-run World Beyblade Organization lets players mix both brands' Beyblade X parts. A few practical points still apply:

  • Reported small differences. One collector comparison reports that Hasbro Ratchets grip the Bit more tightly, and that the part under the Gear Chip turns smoothly on Japanese tops but feels notched on Hasbro ones. These come from a single source and are not manufacturer statements, so check the individual part rather than assuming either way.
  • Launchers. Beyblade X launchers from both brands use the same X hook. Hasbro's own customer care says X launchers work only with Beyblade X tops, so Burst launchers are out. Spin direction still has to match. See launcher compatibility.
  • Stadiums. This is where the two lines diverge most. Hasbro's Xtreme Beystadium in the Xtreme Battle Set is a smaller rectangular arena, about 17.2 × 14 inches, with an "X-Celerator Rail". Takara Tomy's BX-10 Xtreme Stadium is square, uses the Xtreme Line and is the stadium named for the 2026 GP qualifiers. Hasbro also sold a Tournament Beystadium that matches BX-10. Our stadiums guide covers the Takara Tomy range.

Beyblade Burst: where the real fitment problems were

Most "Hasbro doesn't fit" stories come from the Burst era, and they were true. Takara Tomy Burst Layers and Drivers locked with clicking teeth. Most Hasbro Energy Layers and Performance Tips used smooth slopes instead. Mixing the two either wore the slopes, which made a Hasbro Layer harder to burst, or left a Hasbro Tip loose on a Takara Tomy Layer. The WBO banned cross-brand Layer and Driver pairings for that reason, although Discs could be shared.

Hasbro also simplified many later Burst sub-lines. Its HyperSphere, SpeedStorm and QuadDrive tops often swapped Takara Tomy's metal or rubber for plastic and changed how the chip held. Hasbro's own copy warned that QuadDrive was "not fully compatible with other systems". The exception was Hasbro's Pro Series, which used Takara Tomy designs and toothed locks, although Hasbro still labelled it a closed system. None of this applies to Beyblade X, but it explains why older advice warns against Hasbro parts.

Metal and Plastic generations, briefly

Hasbro's Metal Fusion and Metal Masters tops were largely the same moulds in different colours and plastic. Its Metal Fury (4D) releases were often simplified: Takara Tomy's Big Bang Pegasis F:D became a one-piece, much lighter Cosmic Pegasus without the mode-change tip. In the Plastic generation, Hasbro replaced metal weight cores with its Magnacore magnets in many tops. Collectors of older lines should check each part rather than assume the two brands match.

Tournaments: which brand can you bring?

This depends on who runs the event:

  • Takara Tomy Asia events in Malaysia. The 6th-edition regulations (November 2024) allow only Beyblade X products "officially released and distributed in your own country". Here that means Takara Tomy product. Later editions exist, so read the organiser's current notice.
  • BEYBLADE X GP 2026. The official GP page names Kuala Lumpur as a qualifier city and specifies the BX-10 Xtreme Stadium.
  • Hasbro events in the West. North American qualifiers ran on Hasbro's own Beyblade X line.
  • WBO community events. Official Beyblade X products from either brand are allowed.

Our Malaysia tournament guide has the local event context.

What this means for buyers in Malaysia

Match the Blade, Ratchet and Bit string, not the name on the box. A Hasbro "Sword Dran 3-60F" and a Takara Tomy "Dran Sword 3-60F" are the same combo. For official Malaysian events, buy the Takara Tomy release distributed here. A Hasbro box is not fake just because it is Hasbro, but a box claiming to be one brand while carrying the other's name or code is a warning sign. Our buying-authentic checklist covers what to inspect.

Frequently asked questions

Is Takara Tomy or Hasbro the original Beyblade?

Takara Tomy. Beyblade was created by Takara in 1999, and Takara Tomy designs every generation. Hasbro sells the line under licence in the West.

Do Hasbro Beyblade X parts fit Takara Tomy Beyblade X tops?

Yes. Beyblade X Blades, Ratchets and Bits from both brands are designed to interchange, and Hasbro describes its tops as identical in weight, feel and performance. Stadiums are where the two lines differ most.

Is Hasbro Beyblade sold officially in Malaysia?

We found no official Hasbro Beyblade X distribution in Malaysia. Takara Tomy product is distributed here by Litt Tak, so Hasbro boxes in Malaysia are usually grey imports.

Can I use Hasbro Beyblades at Takara Tomy tournaments in Malaysia?

Takara Tomy Asia's regulations allow only Beyblade X products officially released and distributed in your own country, which in Malaysia means Takara Tomy. Always confirm with the event organiser.

Why did old Hasbro Burst parts not fit Takara Tomy ones?

Most Hasbro Burst Layers and Tips locked with smooth slopes, while Takara Tomy used teeth. Mixing them changed burst resistance, so tournament rules banned cross-brand Layer and Driver pairings. Beyblade X does not have that problem.
