Tamiya Mini 4WD is a 1:32-scale motorised model car with no radio control: two AA batteries drive it down a slotless guided track, and the only inputs are the ones you build in beforehand. Tamiya released the first Mini 4WD kit in July 1982, and by December 1995 the series had passed 100 million units sold — one of the longest-running model-car lines Tamiya makes, with an active hobby-shop racing scene in Malaysia built around it. What's in the box, and what you add yourself

A basic kit ships as a body shell, a chassis, a stock motor (the FA-130, roughly 9,900 RPM at 2.4-3.0V), gears, wheels and tyres — enough to build a running car with a side cutter, a small file and a cross-head screwdriver. You supply two AA batteries: ordinary alkaline cells are fine for casual running, but any officially sanctioned Tamiya event permits only Tamiya-branded R6/AA/UM3 batteries, so keep a pack aside if you plan to race. Almost everyone eventually adds grade-up parts — rollers, brakes, a different motor, ball bearings — once the stock setup shows its limits on a real track. Choosing your first chassis

The body is cosmetic. The chassis underneath — the plastic tub holding motor, gearbox and battery — is what actually determines handling, and it's shared across many different body shells. Tamiya's current chassis catalogue publishes these dimensions for four common types:

MA and MS are midship double-shaft chassis that drive all four wheels without a separate propeller shaft; VZ is a rear-motor single-shaft chassis that drives through one. Any of the three is a reasonable first choice — buy the kit for the chassis you want, and treat the body shell as a bonus. Official machine types, dimensions and weight

If you plan to enter any Tamiya-run event, your car has to fall inside published limits. Tamiya's current Official Regulations name ten eligible machine types — Racing Mini 4WD, Fully-Cowled Mini 4WD, Aero Mini 4WD, Super Mini 4WD, Mighty Mini 4WD, Laser Mini 4WD, Mini 4WD REV, Mini 4WD PRO, R/C Mini 4WD and Truckin' Mini 4WD — and set these envelope limits:

Modifications are limited to cutting plastic or drilling holes in genuine parts — a homemade chassis, or a carbon/FRP/metal plate reshaped from its molded form, is not allowed, and every part has to stay identifiable as itself. Motor coils can't be disassembled or rewound. These are the published rules, not a shop's local house rules, so treat this table as a starting reference and read the official rules and tech-inspection checklist alongside the current regulation pages before an event — organiser rules and on-day technical inspection always have the final say.

Stock Class, open racing, and what Malaysian shops actually run

Most Tamiya-affiliated racing runs Stock Class, which layers extra restrictions on the general regulations: no chassis cutting or shaving, no homemade chassis, and parts limited to genuine Tamiya Mini 4WD, R/C Mini 4WD and Dangun Racer components. Stock Class also restricts what may be mounted in the zones outside the front and rear wheels — parts other than the body face limits there, with defined exemptions for body-mounted parts — and bans aluminium setting tools left attached to the car. Dash-series motors, ball bearings and polycarbonate bodies are allowed; reversing the chassis, drilling new screw holes, or cutting tyres are not. Malaysian hobby shops typically run their own open days on 3-lane or 5-lane tracks, sometimes under a separately organised class like BMAX rather than Tamiya's own Stock Class — BMAX rules are set by whoever runs that event, not Tamiya, so never assume Stock Class legality carries over. Racing and storing your car in Malaysian conditions

Heat and humidity are not cosmetic concerns here. Sponge tyres soften and wear faster in sustained heat, bearings pick up moisture and corrode without regular lubrication, and batteries left in a hot car or storeroom lose capacity faster than the same cells kept in a dry, air-conditioned space. None of this is unique to Mini 4WD, but it's easy to underrate until a car that ran fine last month starts pulling to one side or losing top speed for no visible reason. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special track to start, or can I practise at home?

You can build and test-run on any flat guided lane, including a small home loop, but most beginners progress faster by visiting a hobby shop's 3-lane or 5-lane track early on — real corners, real bank sections and other racers' cars teach things a straight home run never will.

Is MA, MS or VZ the "correct" beginner chassis?

There isn't one correct answer. All three are current chassis with an 80mm wheelbase and comparable dimensions; kits differ more by which body and parts they bundle than by chassis alone. Pick based on the kit and body you actually want to build, then learn that chassis properly before switching.

Can I use any AA battery for racing?

For casual running, yes. For a Tamiya-run official event, no — the current Official Regulations require genuine Tamiya-branded R6/AA/UM3 batteries, and R/C Mini 4WD and TR-1 chassis specifically require alkaline cells. Check the exact battery rule for your event rather than assuming.
