Fresh gear grease is a boundary lubricant: a thin film that keeps tooth contact from grinding metal or plastic directly. Once that film starts collecting airborne dust and the fine swarf a gearbox sheds on its own, it stops lubricating and starts grinding, packed straight into the mesh it was meant to protect. Grease that has gone from clear or white to grey, gritty, or dark should be removed, not topped up — fresh grease over contaminated grease just gives the abrasive more binder to work with. Lubricate deliberately, not generously: a light film on the mesh and one drop of oil per bearing is the target. A visible bead of grease anywhere on the car is already too much — it will be carrying dust again within a run or two. Spin each roller by hand and confirm it turns freely — a roller with grit worked into its bearing looks and sounds fine at rest but adds drag on every wall contact during a run. What the regulations actually say about a clean car
A few other regulation points touch condition and cleanliness directly. Bodies and stickers must stay legible — officials may reject a car "where it is difficult to check [decorations]" — so a heavily grime-coated or over-painted body is a problem independent of speed. Tyres cannot have their surface material altered by any process, ruling out any cleaning method that changes the rubber itself, not just what sits on top of it. Batteries carry their own hard rule: "if a battery or its label appears to be damaged in any way, it will not be accepted for safety reasons," making a corroded pack or torn label a race-day rejection, not a cosmetic issue. Storage between sessions

How often should I actually clean the drivetrain?
A full strip every two to three race packs is a reasonable baseline indoors, tightened to after every session outdoors or somewhere dusty. Watch for grease changing colour or texture, or a gear mesh going from a smooth whirr to a grinding or rattling note between scheduled cleans.
Is more grease ever the fix for a noisy gearbox?
Almost never. A grinding note usually means the mesh is too tight or contaminated, and a rattle usually means too loose — both are typically a mounting, spacer or cleanliness problem, not a lubrication shortfall.
