Mini 4WD Lubrication Basics

Lubrication reduces friction, but over-lubrication attracts dust and creates drag. On a Mini 4WD, less is almost always more.

Grease for gears

A light film of gear grease on the meshing surfaces is enough. A visible bead is too much: it collects dust immediately and turns abrasive within a couple of runs.

Oil for bearings

Bearings want a low-viscosity oil, applied a drop at a time. Grease in a small bearing adds drag rather than reducing it, which is the opposite of the intention.

Keep it off the tyres

Any lubricant that reaches the tyre contact surface destroys grip. Apply carefully, and wipe the wheels afterwards if there is any doubt.

Reapply on a schedule

Lubricant migrates and picks up dirt. Clean and reapply periodically rather than adding more on top of what is already there.
