Mini 4WD Scale, Size and Race Measurements

"What scale is Mini 4WD?" has a short answer and a longer, more useful one. Short answer: Tamiya packaging and hobby-press coverage commonly describe the cars as 1:32 scale. Longer answer: that number is a styling convention for how a body is sculpted relative to the vehicle it represents, not a fixed physical size — the chassis underneath has changed dimensions many times since the first Mini 4WD kit shipped in July 1982, so two kits marketed under the same "1:32" label can sit several millimetres apart on the shelf, cosmetic for display but not for a car headed to an official track. There, the numbers that matter are the ones Tamiya's own race regulations set, in millimetres and grams, not a scale ratio.

Why the "1:32" label doesn't fix a single size

Mini 4WD bodies are sculpted at roughly 1:32 relative to their real-car or original-illustration subject, the same shorthand used alongside static 1:24 or 1:43 kits. But the chassis platform is not scaled to match every body — it is one of a limited set of standardised moulds Tamiya has revised repeatedly across four decades. As a demonstration of how elastic "scale" is as a marketing term rather than a measurement, Tamiya's own 1/1 Giant Mini 4WD Project in 2015 built a real, human-scale copy of the Aero Avante: proof the "1:32" on a box is a styling reference, not a guarantee any two Mini 4WD cars share a footprint.

Official race dimensions, weight and tyre limits

For a car entered in official Tamiya-run competition, the number that matters is not a scale ratio but the finished-car limits set in the official Mini 4WD Race Regulations. These are measured on the completed car — chassis, body, rollers, stays, tyres and battery together — not on any single part in isolation.

Batteries are restricted too: only Tamiya-branded R6/AA/UM3 cells are permitted for most machine types, while R/C Mini 4WD and TR-1 chassis cars are restricted to alkaline cells specifically — rechargeables are not permitted in those two. A roller pair mounted too wide or a car that clears 165mm once the body and rear wing are fitted fails inspection regardless of what scale the body claims to be.

How much a bare chassis actually varies

Tamiya's Chassis & Compatible Parts Catalogs publish length, width, wheelbase, weight and clearance for every chassis mould, and the spread inside the 165 × 105mm ceiling is large. A sample across the three motor layouts Tamiya still sells parts for:

Only the FM-A row sits below the 90g race floor as published, and only because Tamiya quotes that chassis without batteries — the ME and MS catalogue figures are measured with tyres and batteries fitted, and most other rows are with-batteries weights too, so published chassis weights generally already clear the 90g floor. That floor applies to the completed car, not the chassis alone. Clearance also varies almost threefold, from a low-riding MA (2.2mm) to a higher AR (5mm), so a setup copied from one chassis won't automatically clear the same jump gap on another. The machine types the regulations actually permit

Dimensions alone don't decide eligibility — the regulations also name the allowed product lines: Laser Mini 4WD, Mini 4WD REV, Mini 4WD PRO, Racing Mini 4WD, Super Mini 4WD, Fully-Cowled Mini 4WD, Aero Mini 4WD, Mighty Mini 4WD, R/C Mini 4WD, and Truckin' Mini 4WD. PRO cars — ME, MA and MS chassis — are further restricted to the kit motor or a motor built for the PRO range; a standard single-shaft Tuned or Dash motor won't even fit a PRO chassis's dual-shaft mount, so this is a physical limit as much as a written one. Stock Class: same size ceiling, different modification rules

The official Stock Class Regulations publish no separate length, width or weight number — the general limits above still apply. What changes is what you're allowed to do to reach them: chassis cutting, shaving and homemade chassis are banned outright; additional parts are limited to genuine Tamiya Mini 4WD, R/C Mini 4WD and Dangun Racer parts; bodies may only be shaved or have obstructing sections cut away, not split into pieces. A defined "forbidden zone" — between the front and rear shafts and bearings, plus the rear half of the front wheels and front half of the rear wheels across the tyre's full width — bans trimming material away there. Tyres can swap between diameters and widths within the 22–35mm/8–26mm limits above, but cutting or shaving a tyre is not permitted. BMAX and other local classes are organiser-defined, a different ruleset from Stock Class — never assume one allowance carries over without checking that organiser's own rules.

The size outlier: EZ chassis and off-road kits

Not every current Mini 4WD product is built to the lane-racing dimensions above. The FUN-VROOM, part of the EZ Chassis line, measures 130mm long, 72mm wide and 71mm tall — narrower and shorter than any chassis in the table above, and taller than the 70mm race ceiling, because it's an off-road bashing kit, not a track racer. It runs on a single AA cell rather than two, drives through a double-shaft motor geared at 50:1, and snap-assembles without cement or screws — built for younger or first-time builders, not official competition. A kit's suitability for a sanctioned event depends on its product line and chassis type, not just whether it says "Mini 4WD" on the box.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum length or width, or only a maximum?

The regulations set maximums for length, width and height, and minimums only for ground clearance (at least 1mm) and total weight (at least 90g with battery and motor fitted). A shorter or narrower car isn't illegal on its own — it still has to clear those two floors and pass the organiser's inspection on the day.

Do Stock Class or BMAX use different size limits from the base regulations?

Stock Class publishes no separate dimension or weight numbers — the general limits still apply, and it restricts modifications and parts instead. BMAX is a separately organiser-defined class and should never be assumed to inherit Stock Class or general-regulation allowances without checking that event's own rules. Either way, organiser rules and on-day technical inspection have the final say — review the official rules and technical inspection checklist before race day.

Do different chassis moulds share the same "1:32" label despite different sizes?

Yes. Bare chassis length alone has ranged from 127mm on early Type-1 and Type-3 chassis to 158mm on the current VZ chassis, both marketed under the general "1:32" description — the scale ratio describes body styling, not a fixed chassis footprint, so the dimension table above, not the scale label, is what actually constrains a build.
