Almost every "slow car" complaint traces back to one of a short list of repeat mistakes, not to a missing upgrade part. This is a diagnostic checklist: symptoms you can actually see or hear on the bench and on the track, matched to the specific setup mistake behind each one. Mistake 1: over-motoring the course

Fitting the highest-RPM motor you own before the chassis, gearing and course can use it is the single most common mistake. A Sprint-Dash or Mach-Dash PRO on a short, technical layout often loses to a Hyper-Dash car with a lower gear ratio, because the faster motor never reaches a stable speed before the next corner and instead arrives too hot, bounces off a roller, and course-outs. Current draw is the other half of this: Tamiya's official race regulations require two Tamiya-branded AA (R6/UM3) batteries and set a minimum finished weight of 90g including motor and batteries — a high-current motor sags a pair of AAs far faster than a Tuned-class motor, so lap times get less consistent race after race even before the battery is "dead." Ultra-Dash and Plasma-Dash are excluded from official Tamiya events entirely for this reason. Mistake 2: uneven or wrong-diameter rollers

A roller pair that isn't the same height side-to-side steers the car under load — it will run straight on a flat bench and then pull toward one wall the instant it hits a banked or S-curve section, which looks like a chassis problem but is a 1-2mm height mismatch. Official regulations cap roller (wheel/tyre) diameter at 22-35mm and width at 8-26mm, and under Stock Class rules non-matching roller combinations — mixing ring types or sizes on the same axle — are specifically disallowed. Symptoms to check for: the car drifts consistently the same direction on a straight, one roller spins freely while the other drags, or the car only mistracks after a jump (a sign the rollers aren't seated flat, not that they're the wrong size). Mistake 3: brake height and sponge mistakes

Too much brake, or brakes set uneven left-to-right, is the second most common cause of a car that looks fine on a straight but stalls or flips on a slope. A brake sponge set too thick or too low kills speed on every straight section, not just the bank it was tuned for; set too high or worn unevenly, it fails to slow the car into a downhill and the car launches off the following jump. Rear brakes matter more than front on most layouts because they control landing attitude after a jump — a car that noses in hard on landing usually needs more rear brake, not less front. Mistake 4: gear mesh, bearing fit and drivetrain noise

A gearbox that whines or feels gritty when spun by hand is losing power to friction before it ever reaches the wheels. The two usual causes are gears pressed together too tightly (over-meshed, so they bind rather than roll) or a bearing that's the wrong fit for its counterbore and sits at a slight angle. Both show up the same way: a noisy, warm gearbox after a run and a car that's slower in a straight line than its motor spec suggests it should be. Mistake 5: weight, balance and mass damper placement

Building underweight is a straightforward disqualification risk: official regulations set a 90g minimum including motor and batteries, so a heavily lightened chassis with lightened gears and a light motor can genuinely fall under that line and fail inspection outright. The opposite mistake is worse in practice, though: mass dampers or added weight bunched at one corner instead of distributed, which makes a car bounce unevenly off jumps rather than settling flat. Should I fix the motor or the chassis first when a car is inconsistent?

Chassis first. A faster motor amplifies whatever the chassis is already doing wrong — an uneven roller or a brake mismatch that was a minor wobble at stock speed becomes a course-out at Hyper-Dash speed. Get a stable, repeatable lap on the stock or a Tuned-class motor before stepping up.

Is a noisy gearbox always a sign of a problem?

Not always — some mesh noise is normal — but a gearbox that's noticeably louder or hotter than it was when new, or noticeably louder than a same-spec car, is worth opening up to check gear mesh and bearing seating before assuming the motor is simply weak.
