Mini 4WD Race Day Checklist

Most cars pulled at technical inspection, or that drop out mid-heat, were not beaten by a faster build — they were beaten by something a five-minute check would have caught. Tamiya's Official Mini 4WD Race Regulations and Official Stock Class Regulations set exact, checkable numbers for dimensions, weight, tyres, motors and batteries, and every sanctioned event inspects against them before your car reaches the start line. This is a race-day checklist built around those numbers, plus the pit-box and pre-run habits that keep a legal, running car legal for every heat. Organiser rules and on-the-day inspection always have final say — treat this as preparation, not a substitute for the current rule sheet.

Pack the night before: the legality baseline

Build and weigh the complete car — body clipped on, motor and battery fitted, tyres mounted — the night before, not in the pit queue. A bare chassis on a scale says nothing about the 90g minimum, and a body sitting slightly proud can push a car over the length or height limit without looking wrong to the eye.

Only Tamiya-branded R6/AA/UM3 cells are permitted, and R/C Mini 4WD and TR-1 chassis are restricted to alkaline cells specifically — a rechargeable pair legal in a standard chassis is not automatically legal in those two. Bring cells in their original Tamiya packaging if a marshal asks. Motor legality, at a glance

The regulations name eligible motors rather than set a performance ceiling: kit-included standard motor, Rev-Tuned, Torque-Tuned, Atomic-Tuned, Rev-Tuned 2, Torque-Tuned 2, Light-Dash, Sprint-Dash, Power-Dash, Hyper-Dash 2, Hyper-Dash 3 and Hyper Mini are all permitted. PRO machines — ME, MA and MS chassis — may only run the kit motor or a motor built for the PRO series; a standard single-shaft Dash motor doesn't fit a PRO gearbox regardless of legality. Ultra-Dash and Plasma-Dash are absent from the list entirely; the regulations give no reason for their omission. Pre-heat mechanical check

Do this at the pit table before every heat, not just the first run of the day — a car that passed inspection at 9am can pick up a loose screw or a worn brake sponge by 2pm.

  • Drivetrain: spin each axle by hand, listening for grinding and a tight spot in the mesh. A loose gear cover changes mesh depth and shows up as intermittent binding, not constant drag.
  • Rollers: every roller should spin freely with no play. Height drifts as stay screws loosen — an uneven left/right pair steers the car under braking.
  • Brakes: confirm height hasn't shifted and sponge hasn't compressed or torn through; a brake that sat right at build can sink after enough jump landings.
  • Mass dampers: each should move freely with no binding — a stuck damper does nothing on landing, indistinguishable from no damper fitted.
  • Battery contact: reseat cells, check terminals are clean. A poor connection mimics a drivetrain fault, sending people tearing down a gearbox that was never the problem.
  • Fasteners: check every visible screw before it becomes a part on the track instead of the car.

What to pack in the pit box

The rules flag which failures are forgiving: a driver figure, a body part, or a mass damper coming off mid-run isn't itself grounds for disqualification. That leniency doesn't extend to running gear, so pack:

  • Spare axles, crown and pinion gears matched to your current ratio
  • Spare rollers and the screws/spacers that mount them
  • Spare brake sponge, cut to your current height
  • An assortment of chassis and stay screws
  • A hex driver sized for your screws, plus a pinion gear puller for field ratio changes
  • Fresh, unopened Tamiya-branded batteries — more than one set
  • Your kit box or instruction sheet, in case a marshal asks

At the inspection table

The car that clears inspection quickly is the one already checked at home in full race configuration. Officials hold, in Tamiya's own wording, absolute authority over compliance and can disqualify a car at their discretion. Two traps recur: a PRO-chassis car (ME/MA/MS) fitted with a non-PRO motor fails immediately even if that motor is legal in a standard chassis, since the families aren't interchangeable; and a Stock Class car with chassis cutting, new screw holes, or a reversed chassis is turned away regardless of the rest of the build, since those are prohibited outright rather than judged on effect. Both are avoidable with the pre-heat check above.

Frequently asked questions

Does a loose part falling off during a run disqualify me?

Not automatically. A driver figure, a body part, or a mass damper with a ball connector coming off mid-race is not itself a disqualification under the Stock Class FAQ — the question is whether the car was legal as it started the heat.

My car passed inspection last event but failed this one — why?

Tamiya's regulations are the baseline, but organisers can add stricter local rules, and BMAX is organiser-defined rather than derived from Stock Class. Ask for that event's specific rule sheet.

How much spare weight margin should I build in?

The regulations state an "at least 90g" floor, not a target — a car built to exactly 90g on a home scale can register under that on an event scale with different calibration. A gram or two of margin, verified the night before, removes that risk.

  • Drivetrain, rollers, brakes and dampers hand-checked at the pit table, not just at home
  • Spares packed: axles, gears, rollers, screws, brake sponge, tools, batteries
  • Stock Class entrants: chassis unmodified, no new holes, correct orientation
