Tamiya Mini 4WD Parts Explained
A Mini 4WD is not one product — it is five systems bolted to a single plastic tub, and each has its own official parts catalogue and its own rule in Tamiya's race regulations. Knowing which part does which job, and which jobs are rule-constrained rather than free tuning choices, turns "the car is slow" into a specific diagnosis instead of a guess. Chassis: the part everything else bolts to
The chassis is the single moulded tub that fixes wheelbase, motor position and every mounting point for the rest of the car. Tamiya's own chassis and compatible parts catalogue lists well over a dozen families, grouped by where the motor sits. Midship double-shaft chassis — ME, MA and MS — sit the motor between the axles and drive all four wheels directly with no propeller shaft; ME and MA run 156mm on an 80mm wheelbase, MS is shorter at 152mm on the same wheelbase. Rear-motor chassis — VZ, AR and the Super series — carry the motor behind the rear axle; VZ is 158mm long on an 80mm wheelbase, and AR was the first Tamiya chassis to support six rollers, at 155mm on an 82mm wheelbase. Front-motor chassis (FM-A, Super FM, FM) drive from the front axle backward. Drivetrain: motor, gears, shafts and bearings
Power moves through a short chain: pinion gear on the motor shaft, a counter gear, a crown gear on each driven axle, then the axle and wheel. Standard chassis use a single-shaft motor and, on front- or rear-motor layouts, a propeller shaft to reach the far axle; double-shaft PRO chassis (ME, MA, MS and similar) use a double-shaft PRO motor driving all four wheels directly — the two motor families are not interchangeable. Gear sets are sold by ratio (commonly 3.5:1, 4:1 or 4.2:1), trading top speed for acceleration and hill climb; every meshing surface costs a little power to friction, so gear condition, mesh depth and bearing quality matter more than most beginners expect. Contact with the track: wheels, tyres, rollers and brakes
Four systems decide whether a fast drivetrain stays on the track. Wheels and tyres put power down and are rule-bound directly: tyre diameter is 22–35mm and width 8–26mm, and tyres must be physically attached to the machine. Rollers — small bearings or plastic wheels on the front and rear stays — do not drive the car; they run against the course's guide rails, keeping the chassis tracking through corners without scrubbing speed against the wall. Brakes are foam sponge pads on rear (and sometimes front) stays that contact the track on landings and before drops, slowing the car enough to stay planted — Stock Class rules permit cutting brake sponges to shape and height, one of the few sanctioned ways to fine-tune braking without swapping parts. Stability and finishing parts: stays, mass dampers and body
FRP and carbon stays (plates) bolt to the chassis and give rollers, brakes and dampers a mounting point; FRP flexes slightly on impact while carbon resists bending, and Stock Class rules allow carbon plates and cementing multiple plates together for rigidity. Mass dampers are small weighted parts, usually front- or rear-mounted, that absorb a jump landing's bounce so the car settles faster instead of bouncing off line — notably, a mass damper falling off during a race does not disqualify the machine, which tells you Tamiya treats them as a tuning aid, not a structural requirement. The body is cosmetic but not rule-free: Stock Class permits shaving it down and cutting away sections that obstruct rollers or airflow, and driver figures and rear wings stay optional. General regulations permit cutting plastic and drilling holes if the original part shape stays clearly identifiable, and prohibit homemade chassis or bodies outright. Stock Class layers tighter limits on top: chassis cutting or shaving is prohibited, only existing holes in FRP, carbon or the chassis may be countersunk, and modifications to parts other than the body are prohibited outside specific exceptions (ball bearings, carbon plates, cemented plate stacks, countersunk holes, brake-sponge cutting). Do all these parts fit every chassis?
No. Motors split into single-shaft (standard chassis) and double-shaft PRO (ME/MA/MS and similar) families that are not interchangeable, and stays, bodies and rollers are often shaped for one chassis family. Which part should a beginner upgrade first?
None, immediately. On a standard kit the same logic applies: run the stock setup a few packs, then change one system at a time and note what actually improved.
Are these the only legal parts in every class?
No. Stock Class restricts parts to genuine Tamiya Mini 4WD, R/C Mini 4WD and Dangun Racer components, while a fully open class may allow more. Organiser-run classes such as BMAX set their own rules that are not automatically the same as Tamiya's official Stock Class — always check the specific event's published rules rather than assuming.
